Serena Williams Explains Her Pink Look at Meghan and Harry’s Royal Wedding

In an as-told-to essay for Vogue earlier this week, Serena Williams dropped the heavy news that she is retiring from tennis after a two-decade career. In a much lighter video interview for the magazine, however, she looked back on some of the outfits she’s worn on and off the court during her time in the spotlight. She discussed her affection for wearing Versace, and also broke down one of her most memorable off-court fashion moments: when she and husband Alexis Ohanian attended the May 2018 wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

While looking at a picture of the light pink sheath dress Williams wore to the ceremony at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor, she explained some of the details. “This is at the royal wedding, when my friend Meghan married Harry,” she said. “Again, another Versace look and my jewels are from Bulgari, which was just stunning, and I have a fascinator on.”

She said that a lot of thought and effort went into her hair for the day. “What’s so iconic about this is that I was, like, ‘Royal wedding? I’m definitely wearing braids,’” she said, adding that two or three girls spent all night braiding her hair, even after she decided to take a nap. “I was so tired, and  I was like ‘I’m going to sleep.’ So I lied down, and then they just kept braiding until the morning, and they finally finished. It was a very long process but it was so worth it.”

She turned her attention to Ohanian’s look for the day. “I love Alexis’’ look as well,” she said. “It reminds me a little bit of Downton Abbey,” she said. “Alexis is wearing the tails, and he looks a lot younger here, hah!”

Williams and Ohanian were one highlight on a guest list that included plenty of celebrity guests, such as Oprah, Gayle King, Meghan’s friends George and Amal Clooney, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Elton John and David Furnish, James Corden, and Idris Elba, who also served as a DJ at the Windsor Castle wedding reception. Though the reception was private, Elba later mentioned that he took suggestions from Meghan when it came to the songs he played during his set. He didn’t get into specifics about Meghan’s list but said, “There was some West Coast on it.”
