Umm, should we all be wearing black blusher?

Another day, another bizarre TikTok beauty trend. And this time, it’s a pretty unique product that’s doing the rounds on the video-sharing site – aka, black blusher.

It was makeup creator @youngcouture who sparked the frenzy, after sharing a clip of herself trying the Wet & Wild Color Icon cream blusher – which works to adapt to the skin tone and create a flattering shade.

“This is a black blush… literally, it’s a blush,” she tells viewers, before applying a little onto her cheeks with a brush. “Wait a minute, this is actually so beautiful! It turned into this beautiful mauve colour, the black is gone… but what do you guys think? I’m kind of digging this!”

Cue plenty more TikTokers trying out the trend, including fellow beauty guru Rose Siard (@roseandben), who demonstrated a colour-shifting black shimmery powder blusher – called Zombie Blush, also by Wet & Wild. Again, the product created a soft, flattering shade and a pretty gorgeous amount of glow. Mind blown.

Other creators found the cream product to enhance skin texture – including @_jessytips, who gave an honest review, describing the product as “muddy and greasy” on her darker skin. Ouch. But, she did agree that the shade might have suited her in a different formula.

Actually, the concept of colour-changing blusher has been around for a while – with brands like Givenchy and Lipstick Queen launching versions of the product back in 2017. In fact, mega makeup YouTuber Nikkie Tutorials created a viral video back then, reviewing the Givenchy offering. (Spoiler alert: she called it the ‘World’s Worst Blush’. Oh dear.)

So what is this makeup magic? It’s all to do with the pH of the skin, dear reader. When the colourant in the product comes into contact with the skin, it reacts to the change and turns pink. It looks different on different skin tones because well, all blushers look different on different skin tones.

Either way, there’s something kind of fun about applying a product and watching it change shades in front of you… right? That certainly seems to be the case, since the Wet & Wild ‘Zombie’ blusher has completely sold out since its viral TikTok moment. Would you try it?!
