Meghan rarely wore red lipstick while working as a senior royal family member. But while bold lip colors are generally an uncommon sight on the women of British royal family, they aren’t against protocol. They just aren’t preferred.
In a summer 2018 interview with ELLE.com, royal etiquette expert Myka Meier, Beaumont Etiquette‘s founder/director and a British-American trained by a former member of the Queen’s household, explained why Meghan’s makeup was in “much more muted tones, so we see much more natural colors” before she stepped back from her working royal family member role in 2020.
“We’ve seen her in the past in red lips and now we don’t,” Meier said of Meghan in 2018. “She’s wearing that light, neutral pink that is favored in the palaces and other royals.”
But Meghan could’ve worn berry and bright red lip colors too protocol-wise: “She’s totally fine to wear whatever makeup she feels is appropriate for the occasion,” Meier said. “And I think we still will see her in the future playing with a little bit more color.”
