You are an accomplished journalist, share with us what you got you started in writing?
I got started in writing after I got my first writing job as a feature writer for a pop culture website. I figured it would be a great way to get my start as a writer before I pursued what I really wanted to do so that helped me a lot and after five months, I shifted from there to writing about music for BANDED PR.
In middle school and high school, I won creative writing awards at my schools, plus I also wrote for school newspapers so that helped me prepare for my future as a writer.
Tell us more about what you write about and why you chose to focus on covering music and artists?
I write about up and coming artists, new artists releases, personal pieces and I also had an article published about growing up a fangirl to working in the music industry and I talked to different music industry professionals for that article.
I chose to focus on covering music and artists because I’ve always been very passionate about music. I wasn’t aware that music journalism was an actual field until my junior year of high school so after watching “Almost Famous” for the first time, I decided that’s what I wanted to do after years of dreaming of becoming a writer.
I have very vivid memories from when I was little of singing along to Celine Dion music in my mom’s car, watching Britney Spears music videos on MTV when my cousin would babysit me, and also continuously listening to the The Cheetah Girls soundtrack and Hilary Duff’s music when I was around 6 or 7 and my family always points out that the passion I have now was always obvious, even when I was little, so I guess the passion I had as a little girl was kind of a sign of me pursuing a career in the industry.
Can you share more about a day in your life? How much writing plays into your daily life?
A day in my life is usually boring haha. I spend my day coming up with ideas, checking my email and DM’s because both of those are always flooded with requests for me to write about a song or album, and also talking to my coworkers on Slack – who are like family to me!
Writing typically plays into my daily life when I get inspired. But I am currently planning on writing a book, so I’m currently outlining my plans on what I’m gonna write about.
What advice would you give someone wanting to get into covering stories?
To keep looking for what captures your eye! And it’s also okay to ask for a little bit of help if needed! That’s what I did when I found out I wasn’t gonna be a feature writer for my first job anymore. My current boss was a huge help during that process because it was actually days before she became my boss and we were already friends so she was helping me a ton!
