Starting out with the sound of birds chirping, the song quickly moves into a steady flow of beats and what the world might sound like when things open up. If you were to paint a picture of your perfect day, the sounds of the city, the hustle and bustle of the neighborhood, I think you start to glean what ViennaCC perceives. “When the Sun Comes Out” has an infectious, repeated chorus (literally him say-singing when the sun comes out). ViennaCC, who is based in Austria, has a deep voice that reminds me of a cross between Ian Curtis (Joy Division) Dave Gahan (Depeche Mode). ViennaCC draws you in with the almost cold-temperature gaze hovering within the tenor, only to open up into a happy-go-lucky, friendly tone.
I can’t quite place it – and it might be the synthesizer layered over an accordion-like sound, but the music base is reedy at times. It also seems to morph into a blend of pop electronica and tip-toeing beats. I think what ViennaCC is trying to impress upon the listener is that there will be some trepidation in going outside after this is all said and done (as we are in the midst of it now, really). But, there is also the time to remember to look up and feel the sun, look at it and smile. See your neighbors and their friendly hello. “When the Sun Comes Out” gives you that extra nudge to feel like you’re going to be okay, that the world is going to get out of this funk.
