There are plenty of reasons to be upset with director Sam Levinson’s latest season of Euphoria, but actress Barbie Ferreira is easing some pressure with her latest confession: Much of the alleged behind-the-scenes drama is apparently “untrue.”
In an interview with Insider, the actress responded—albeit indirectly—to rumors that not all was well between her and the director during production. These alleged incidents included “storming off” set and “butting heads” with Levinson regarding story and screen time decisions, according to The Daily Beast. Rumors proliferated further after a February 2022 cover story with The Cut, which briefly addressed whispers of Ferreira and Levinson “arguing,” underlined by Ferreira’s absence during the show’s premiere event. To The Cut, Ferreira only added, “Kat’s journey this season is a little more internal and a little mysterious to the audience,” which some fans read as an acknowledgment of her character’s decreased presence in season 2.
But Ferreira says reports of the drama have been exaggerated. “What’s interesting about this season is there are so many more eyes on it that even the news cycle has been so interesting to see,” she told Insider. “I’ve seen so many different things, and a lot of it is untrue, and some of it’s kind of like mundane little things.”
She continued, “Sometimes, things take on a life of their own, and they’re not rooted in the truth, but it’s OK because I know it’s just out of passion and out of curiosity and all that good stuff. And I signed up for it. So, I’ll take it. I’ll take the good and the bad.”
Ferreira isn’t the first Euphoria actor to respond to allegations of a “toxic production environment,” as alleged by The Daily Beast. Jacob Elordi, who plays Nate Jacobs, told Variety, “Whilst you shouldn’t suffer, to me there’s great value in working hard…And they just [take] care of us. That’s my family. If I’m working long hours, Sam’s working twice as long, Zendaya’s working three times as long. We’re all in it together.”
In addition, HBO released their own statement defending Levinson’s set: “The well-being of cast and crew on our productions is always a top priority. The production was in full compliance with all safety guidelines and guild protocols. It’s not uncommon for drama series to have complex shoots, and COVID protocols add an additional layer. We maintain an open line of communication with all the guilds, including SAG-AFTRA. There were never any formal inquiries raised.”
