Inner-eye accents are the dinky beauty detail we’re spotting everywhere

Inner-eye accents are the dinky detail you’re about to spot everywhere. When it comes to our eye makeup, the outer corner has always hogged the spotlight. Winged eyeshadow or flicked liner have headlined for yonks… and we get it, smoky eyes are pretty darn foxy and a cat-eye will never not be a classic. But what about our tiny tear ducts? Or the delicate inner area where our eye meets our nose. Those are canvases in waiting, right? Surely we can have a little fun there too?

We’re not the only ones who think so. Recently, we’ve noticed the inner eye corner is getting the attention it deserves, with inverted eyeshadow designs that focus the drama inward, rather than outward, and ombre gradients that play around with the natural light and shade that happens there.

In fact, it’s an area that makeup artists often note gets overlooked. Anatomically-speaking, our noses quite literally throw shade, blocking the amount of light that reaches our inner eyes and it’s also a spot where dark circles tend to be most pronounced. That’s why it’s always a good idea to get up in there with a concealer, taking it in a semi-circle around the side of the nose and eye, but it’s also why MUA’s love to use a highlighter in the inner corner to brighten it up and make it pop.

But, we’ve even seen makeup artists and celebs play around with taking things a step further, with embellished inner eye corners. For her recent stint in Paris for fashion week, Gigi Hadid‘s makeup artist, Patrick Ta, created pretty painterly inner-eye accents across the model’s eyes, clashing her bright blue eye colour with a saturated orange shadow concentrated over the inner crease, then repeated along the water line.

And at the premiere of her film, Dune, Zendaya stepped out with a duo purple inner eye accent that totally changed the vibe of her otherwise dark smoky eye. A deep violet added extra definition and extended the wind inwards, and a pale shimmering lilac helped freshen everything up. Bonus, sketching the colour on the inner corner, draws the focus in more centrally to both eyes which means better and deeper eye-contact.

On the flip side, we’ve seen makeup artists lean in to the dark, vampy aesthetic. If the area is shaded anyways, you could always go with it, like Dove Cameron, whose mua, Kale Teter, created this smouldering black glitz accent, which we’re off to recreate ASAP.
