An industry insider believes that a remake of the classic GoldenEye 007 might be announced sometime in the next few weeks. First released on the Nintendo 64 by famed developer Rare back in 1997, Goldeneye 007 managed to overcome the usual fate of movie tie-in games and was highly regarded as one of the most popular titles on Nintendo’s first 3D console, as well as one of the greatest video games ever made. Goldeneye 007 introduced several concepts that are still part of the FPS genre 25 years later, such as atmosphere-heavy single-player missions that retold the story of Pierce Bronson’s first entry as the legendary British super spy, stealth gameplay, and console multiplayer deathmatches in which friends could challenge each other as either Bond or a wide assortment of supporting characters.
Eurocom would reimagine the original GoldenEye 007 for the Wii in 2010, adding motion controls and substituting Pierce Bronson with then-Bond actor Daniel Craig. This new version of GoldenEye 007 received mostly positive reviews from critics and would be ported to the PS3 and Xbox 360 a year later. However, fans have been left wondering if the original GoldenEye 007 would be remastered for recent systems. Such an update was planned for Xbox Live during the Xbox 360 era, but it was ultimately canceled due to legal issues with Nintendo. A prototype version of this GoldenEye 007 would be leaked online earlier this year.
According to VGC (via Eurogamer), a gaming industry insider claims that a remake is going to be announced sometime in the coming weeks. Ironically enough, he thinks this announcement will come from Microsoft rather than Nintendo, which would be fitting considering that original GoldenEye 007 developer Rare is owned by Microsoft. So far, there is no official word from Rare or Microsoft confirming that a GoldenEye 007 remake is in the works.
Rumors of a new GoldenEye 007 remaster were sparked anew by a leaked list of Xbox achievements that included roughly 55 new awards for playing through the game’s story campaign and multiplayer modes. Additionally, Germany recently lifted its ban on GoldenEye 007 back in October, which has led some fans to wonder if the classic title will be included as part of the Nintendo Switch Online’s Expansion Pack service, which allows Switch owners to play classic N64 titles like Super Mario Kart 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
Hitman developer IO Interactive is currently working on a James Bond game under the tentative title of Project 007, and rumors of a new Bond film with a fresh actor in the lead role have been cropping up for a few years now. With all this in mind, the time could be right for Rare to announce a remaster or remake of GoldenEye 007, which is still considered by many to be one of the best video games to star James Bond. None of these rumors have been officially confirmed yet, so fans should stay posted for any further developments as they unfold.
