Get excited – the first pics of the BBC’s adaptation of Conversations With Friends have just dropped

Remember in 2020 when we all fell in love with Normal People? It really was the show of lockdown (Tiger King? We don’t know her). So you can imagine our excitement when the BBC announced it was adapting Sally Rooney’s first novel, Conversations With Friends.

And things have just got real, as the first pics of the eagerly-awaited adaptation have just dropped (courtesy of British Vogue), including a snap of the star-studded cast (Jemima Kirke, Joe Alwyn, Sasha Lane and Alison Oliver) looking pensively into the camera. You can see the photos, here:

Here’s everything else we know about Conversations With Friends, so far:

What’s Conversations With Friends about?

Sally Rooney wrote Conversations With Friends in 2017, a story about Dublin student and aspiring writer Frances and her best friend (and ex-girlfriend) Bobbi, who befriend older married couple Melissa and Nick – with very complicated emotional consequences (this is Rooney, after all).

The official synopsis reads: “Frances (Alison Oliver) is twenty-one years old, cool-headed, and darkly observant. A college student and aspiring writer, she devotes herself to a life of the mind–and to the beautiful and endlessly self-possessed Bobbi (Sasha Lane), her best friend and comrade-in-arms. Lovers at school, the two young women now perform spoken-word poetry together in Dublin, where a journalist named Melissa (Jemima Kirke) spots their potential.

“Drawn into Melissa’s orbit, Frances is reluctantly impressed by the older woman’s sophisticated home and tall, handsome husband. Private property, Frances believes, is a cultural evil – and Nick (Joe Alwyn), a bored actor who never quite lived up to his potential, looks like patriarchy made flesh. But however amusing their flirtation seems at first, it gives way to a strange intimacy neither of them expect…”

BBC3 is teaming up again with Rooney for the series alongside Oscar-nominated film director Lenny Abrahamson and Element Pictures (the creative team behind Normal People), so it’s safe to hope it’ll be just as spectacular.
