Gwyneth Paltrow just got very honest with her fans during an Instagram Story Q+A.
On January 28, the Goop mogul took to the social media app to find out what her fans really want to know—and give them the answers they seek. Of course, this came with some Goop recs and Glee flashbacks, but it also came with a very candid answer to a question about her “conscious uncoupling” from Chris Martin in 2014 and subsequent divorce in 2016.
“Do you feel like you can really move on after a divorce?” one fan replied to Paltrow’s “ask me anything” prompt, to which the Shakespeare in Love actor answered with a wholehearted “absolutely.”
“Oh, absolutely. It’s a great opportunity to get ruthless with the truth of who you really are, what you want, and what you deserve,” she wrote in her IG Story. When another fan asked if she loves Martin’s longtime girlfriend Dakota Johnson, Paltrow replied, “Very much.”
Back in June, Gwyneth Paltrow shared how the dynamics of her relationship with Chris Martin shifted over time. “He’s like my brother. You know, he’s my family,” she said on the premiere episode of Shop Today With Jill Martin on June 17. “I love him,” she continued, per Today. “And I’m so grateful to him for giving me these kids. It worked out well…. You know, it really did, I have to say.” The former couple share a 16-year-old daughter, Apple, and a 14-year-old son, Moses.
That didn’t mean ending the 11-year marriage was an easy decision. There was a time Paltrow couldn’t imagine calling things off. “I never would have wanted to get divorced,” she said on Anna Faris’s Unqualified podcast back in April, per Harper’s Bazaar. “I never would have wanted to not be married to the father of my kids. Theoretically.”
Still, Paltrow said her split with Martin led to a healthy relationship with her current husband, writer-producer Brad Falchuk. “I had learned more about myself through that process than I could have imagined,” she said. “And because I focused on accountability, I was then able to find the most amazing man and build something that I’ve never had before.”
