Queen Letizia of Spain proved she’s a vintage fashion lover, pulling a designer dress out of her mother-in-law Queen Sofía’s closet that hasn’t been worn in more than 40 years.
The queen and her husband King Felipe attended a reception at the Royal Place in Madrid on Monday for the diplomatic corps accredited in Spain. For the event, the royal wore a Valentino dress featuring a long, A-line forest green skirt with a pink and white sash at the waist and a sheer pink long sleeve top adorned with large, pink floral embroidery. This gown previously belonged to Felipe’s mother, Queen Sofía, who last wore the look in 1977 at Gymnich Castle on a state trip to Germany with her husband, King Juan Carlos. He abdicated the throne in 2014.
The current monarch is known for recycling some of her favorite outfits, much like her British royal counterparts Kate Middleton and Queen Elizabeth. And this 40-year-old high-end design isn’t the only outfit she’s borrowed from her mother-in-law’s wardrobe lately. In September, Letizia wore another of Sofía’s old dresses while receiving Chilean President Sebastián Piñera at the Royal Palace. That time she chose a short-sleeved, pastel pink, floral cocktail dress with rhinestone-embellished blossoms on top and cinched with a slim metallic silver belt. Queen Sofía last wore this particular ensemble in 1981 while on an official trip to Rome.
