Rooney Mara Will Play Audrey Hepburn in Luca Guadagnino’s Biopic

One of Hollywood’s most enduring stars will finally receive her own big-screen biopic. Rooney Mara has been cast as Audrey Hepburn in an upcoming film for Apple, multiple outlets have reported. Mara will also produce the project, which will be directed by Call Me by Your Name filmmaker Luca Guadagnino and written by Vinyl executive producer Michael Mitnick

Hepburn achieved EGOT status over the course of her career. Her breakout role came in 1953’s Roman Holiday, for which she won an Oscar for best actress. Hepburn would go on to star in a string of successful films, including Breakfast at Tiffany’s, My Fair Lady, Sabrina and Funny Face

In addition to her cinematic charm, Hepburn became a major figure in fashion as the muse of French designer Hubert de Givenchy, who custom-designed many of her characters’ costumes. In her later years, she turned her focus to charitable work— becoming a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, earning the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1992, and winning the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award the following year. Hepburn died in Switzerland in 1993 at the age of 63.

This isn’t the first time Hepburn’s life has been chronicled on screen. Previously, Heburn was the subject of the 2000 made-for-TV movie The Audrey Hepburn Story, which starred Jennifer Love Hewitt in the titular role with Emmy Rossum and Sarah Hyland playing younger versions of the actor.

Mara brings an uncanny resemblance to the role of Hepburn, as well as two Academy Award nominations, for 2011’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and 2015’s Carol. No release date has been announced for the project.
