Billie Eilish is continuing to test the waters when it comes to her hair colour.
After transitioning her longtime black hair with green roots to platinum blonde—which took six weeks to accomplish—it seemed Billie decided to go straight for brunette when she debuted her deep chocolate fringed bob back in December 2021. However, it turns out the “Ocean Eyes” singer took a pit stop in the land of auburn hair in November for a week without showing fans…until now.
In the early hours of the 3rd January, Billie prompted fans to pick random dates from 2021 for her to share photos or videos from on Instagram Stories. When one fan chose the 22nd November, the singer revealed that she secretly went red for a very short period of time.
“Took the blonde out and went red for a week hehe,” Billie wrote on top of the video from the hair salon chair.
Sure enough, by the 2nd December, she was posting selfies of her fresh brunette look:

Billie Eilish didn’t explain her decision to part from the red after just a week. Perhaps it was simply how the dye took to her platinum hair as she transitioned from light to dark. Maybe she just didn’t end up liking the auburn look.
Whatever the case may be, she has spoken in the past about her fondness for changing things up. “I’ve had different-coloured hair and vibes for everything I’ve ever done. I wanted [Happier Than Ever] to have its own thing,” Billie told Elle in September 2021. “The other day, I posted a video from when I had green hair, and I saw people go, ‘I miss this Billie, the green-haired Billie.’ I’m still the same person.”
Still, another reason for the change from bright green to blonde was practical, if not a little heartbreaking. “I couldn’t go anywhere with that hair because it was so obviously me. I wanted anonymity,” Billie also told Elle. After going platinum, there was more freedom. “I went to a park with a friend, and I was like, ‘No, I can’t take off my hood!’” she continued. “I was terrified of the paparazzi and these stalkers I’ve had. But my friend was like, ‘Don’t worry: You’re okay. Nothing’s gonna happen.’ And I took my hood off, and I felt like a new person.”
