Early this month, we found ourselves asking, “what did Selena Gomez get tattooed on her back? Now, December 2021’s biggest mystery has finally been solved.
Selena Gomez has more than a dozen tattoos, and on 15 December, celebrity tattoo artist Kieth Scott from Bang Bang NYC teased that the pop star recently got a big one on her back. Scott originally posted a grainy black-and-white snap of a woman with dark hair who has a delicate, asymmetrical tattoo design between her shoulder blades.
The image was taken from quite far away, so it was hard to decipher the design. In the caption, he wrote, “@selenagomez ✍️.” Bang Bang also tagged the Rare Beauty mogul on Instagram Stories. Even from the back, the woman in the picture certainly looked like Selena. The wait was long, but we’re grateful for the mysterious journey that Bang Bang and Selena took us on for a few weeks.

On 28 December, a much better view of the ink has finally been confirmed shared in all its rosy glory. Selena’s tattoo is a large pink rose with a watercolour effect. The pink rose is on her spine and its faint, fading colour gives it the appearance of watercolour. The black leaves of the rose dramatically drip down her back in lieu of a stem.
The entire tat is unlined – save for a few on the rose petals. It’s gorgeous and goth at the same time. Alexa, play Evanescence, please!
Selena’s go-to tat artist shared the full tattoo on his Instagram page, writing, “Watercolor on @selenagomez. Thank you for always being wonderful.” Check out the image from Bang Bang’s official Insta grid below:
