No, I’m not talking about House of the Dragon, though you should be hyped up for that too. I’m talking about Tales of Dunk and Egg.
While we all loved GoT for its interconnected storylines, something we’re sure to see with the upcoming spin-offs, there’s something more exciting about seeing the world of Westeros with a focus on just one main character or two. The Tales of Dunk and Egg should deliver just that.
This upcoming HBO Max TV show follows a lowly hedge knight named Ser Duncan the Tall who surfs the land looking for men to murder and food to eat. I’m not kidding—that’s his plotline. Accompanying him on this, um, fruitful journey is Egg, a trickster who convinces Duncan he should be his squire. The pair make history as they venture through Westeros, but secrets and lies are revealed along the way. Sounds a little ominous, but it wouldn’t be George R. R. Martin’s show if it wasn’t, right?

When will Tales of Dunk and Egg debut?
Your favorite knight and squire aren’t coming to the TV screen anytime soon. Not only has production not started, but there are no actors currently attached to the series yet. No script, director, or composer. We could be looking at a few years here.
Is it based on a novel?
It wouldn’t be a GOT spin-off without the original creator attached in some form. Tales of Dunk and Egg are adapted from Martin’s three novellas, The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword, and The Mystery Knight. Set 90 years prior to the original series, each novella follows a journey between the titular duo.
While House of Dragon is also based on a novel, Fire & Blood, there’s a slight difference between these two spin-offs. Fire & Blood has a definite conclusion, so there shouldn’t be surprise twists or failed endings like the adaptation of the original series. Dunk and Egg, on the other hand, have a bit more storylines to go (Martin says he’d like at least 10 novels with these two characters, per Den of Geek). But considering Martin is still working on The Winds of Winter, it looks like we’ll be waiting for a while.
Is the author involved?
As of right now, it doesn’t look like Martin is involved in the series. As Variety reported, Steve Conrad is the series current writer and executive producer. You might remember Conrad as the creator of Amazon’s Patriot or as the writer of tearjerker The Pursuit of Happyness.
Though Martin is hands-off right now, he may get involved later on as the series begins production. And if he doesn’t, well, Conrad has three novels of source material to work with. That should be enough…hopefully.
