Remember the year that One Day was everywhere? David Nicholls’ best-selling novel was on everyone’s holiday reading lists after its release in 2009, and the subsequent film starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess was hotly anticipated – even if it did receive mixed reviews.
Well, get ready for a One Day revisit, because Netflix has announced that it’s set to launch a new series based on the book.
In a Twitter thread entitled ‘news about new stuff’, the streaming platform detailed the new show, writing: “ONE DAY: Based on the bestselling novel by David Nicholls. An epic, tragi-comic love story, every episode catches up with central characters Em and Dex on one particular day – 15th July – as they grow and change, move together and apart, experience joy and heartbreak.”
It’s set to be a tear-jerker, no doubt – we’re thinking a Normal People-style, pared-back-but-beautiful romance, with some brilliant British acting talent thrown in for good measure. Here’s hoping.
Either way, the internet is suitably excited about the news, with one tweeter replying: “I’ll get my tear ducts ready,” and another adding: “But who will play them! We need more information!”
Truthfully, we don’t know much about the show at the moment – except that it will soon go into production in the UK, according to the Netflix thread.
Of course, we already know the plot line of the series, unless you’ve never picked up the late-noughties cult read. Spoilers below…
The story follows the two lead characters Emma and Dexter, and visits them in their lives on the same day each year – 15 July. We see them meet, start a friendship, travel and live in different parts of the world, getting close and growing apart while going through various ups and downs. And then there’s that ending.
It’s a will-they-won’t-they love story mixed in with laugh out loud comedy and heart-wrenching tragedy – so no doubt the series is set to be a rollercoaster of emotions, just like the book. We’d better prepare ourselves now.
