Sora In Smash Bros. Was Always The Most Obvious Choice

It’s official, Sora is the final DLC character for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. In the time leading up to today’s “The Final Mr. Sakurai Presents for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate,” many had speculated about who the final character could be, which included options like Halo‘s Master Chief or Doom Guy from DOOM. While the latter did manage to join the fight as a new Mii outfit, Sora was always the obvious choice for the final Super Smash Bros. character.

The three-year journey of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has been historic, and its huge roster is proof of that. Beginning with the addition of Piranha Plant in the early days of the game, the roster expanded beyond anyone’s expectations to include iconic characters from completely different companies and franchises such as Kazuya from Tekken and Joker from Persona 5. Predictions about who the most likely final Smash characters were to be went wild because the series’ track record had established that it could be just about anyone.

Sora was a frequent request, and for good reason. The first indication that of his possible inclusion came from the addition of other Square Enix characters like Final Fantasy‘s Cloud and Sephiroth. These are two characters that Sora is quite familiar with, especially the latter, and the fact that Sora is also a Square Enix character made that hope feel more tangible. All that said, the main source of doubt came from whether or not Disney would allow this since its worlds and characters are the backbone of Kingdom Hearts, and Disney is not usually willing to share their IPs.

This feeling changed when a 4chan user claimed that Nintendo requested music from Disney for use in a Super Smash Bros. trailer. This leak would ultimately prove to be true when the cinematic trailer greeted fans with an orchestral arrangement of the series main theme, “Simple and Clean” by Hikaro Utada. That trailer, as well as the full presentation, can be viewed on the official Nintendo YouTube channel.

Ultimately, the reason for choosing Sora as the final character is like that the choice seems a fitting send-off for Sakurai and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Many have wanted to see the iconic character included in the game, and if anyone was going to get Nintendo to work with Disney to make it happen, it would be Sakurai and the Super Smash Bros. team. Now, after years of wishful thinking, fans can soon play as Kingdom Heart‘s Sora and wield the Keyblade as they reflect on the legacy that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has so firmly established.
