Theory: The Matrix 4 Will Replace The Oracle With Sati

The Matrix Resurrections could replace the Oracle with a now-grown Sati. The fourth installment of the Matrix franchise is scheduled to hit theaters in December of 2021, and despite the recent release of an epic teaser trailer, much of the film’s true nature and plot remain under wraps. One of the biggest mysteries surrounding the film is the fate of one of the original trilogy’s key characters: the all-knowing Oracle.

In The Matrix (1999), Neo first encounters the Oracle during a visit to find out if he is truly the prophesied “One” who will bring peace to both the Matrix and the real world. The Oracle’s origins are later revealed to be tied to the creation of the virtual world itself, along with the Matrix’s cryptic Architect. After rebelling against her programing and going into exile before the events of the films, the Oracle decides to take the fate of mankind into her own hands and use her powers of prediction to aid the human resistance. Through her manipulation of Neo, Trinity, and Morpheus across the trilogy, she is able to change the fate of the Matrix and help broker peace between humans and machines.

The last time audiences saw the Oracle was during the final scene of The Matrix Revolutions (2003) where, after having been restored by Neo’s sacrifice and the destruction of the malignant Agent Smith program, she watches a sun rise over a new version of the Matrix. Joining her in this moment is a little girl named Sati, a program whom the Oracle believes will have a great destiny when it comes to the future of the simulation and its relationship with humanity. Given this prophecy, seeing an older version of Sati return in The Matrix Resurrections wouldn’t be surprising, and it’s possible that the gifted program might be serving as the Matrix’s new Oracle in the film. Here’s a look at why this theory could be true.

The New Matrix Needs A New Oracle

The end of The Matrix Revolutions saw the simulation rebooted and reset, creating the seventh iteration of the virtual world. Although currently unconfirmed, the events of The Matrix Resurrections will likely take place within this new, brighter Matrix. With the Architect confirming that she has existed in various forms throughout all previous versions of the simulation, the Oracle’s existence in the world of Resurrections is to be expected. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the Oracle of the latest Matrix will be the exact same program seen in the previous films.

The seventh Matrix is already confirmed to function differently when compared to previous versions. If continuity from Revolutions is to be maintained, the latest Matrix will offer humans the option of being freed from the virtual world or remaining plugged in. The drab, dark look of the older Matrix has also been replaced with a brighter version, which can be seen throughout the Resurrections trailer. Perhaps a new kind of Oracle will be needed for this new kind of Matrix, and Sati could very well grow up to emerge as that new Oracle.

Sati’s Matrix Powers & Origin Explained

Tanveer K. Atwal as Sati in The Matrix Revolutions

Sati was introduced in The Matrix Revolutions, and is first seen when Neo awakens within the limbo-like Mobil train station, an intermediary point between the Matrix and the real world. It’s revealed that Sati is a program created without purpose, and had been targeted for deletion by the machines. However, the cold and emotionless machines have failed to realize that Sati’s existence is the result of love, and her two program parents seek to save their daughter from deletion by smuggling her into the Matrix.

Once safely within the simulation, Sati is handed over to the Oracle for protection. In fact, the Oracle herself plays a big role in saving Sati, as the price for smuggling the little girl into the Matrix is the sacrifice of the code for the Oracle’s “outer shell.” This sacrifice nearly leads to the Oracle’s destruction, but fortunately, she is able to return and reset herself with a new appearance. (In real life, this was the result of the original actress for the Oracle, Gloria Foster, being replaced with Mary Alice after Foster passed away during the filming of The Matrix Reloaded.) The Oracle considered the sacrifice to be worth the risk, as she believed that Sati was a program with untapped powers and an important destiny. While the exact nature of Sati’s powers is never addressed in the film, it is known that she has some form of control over the Matrix itself. In the final scene of Revolutions, the sunrise that greets the newly reset Matrix was actually created by Sati as a tribute to Neo. The warm colors of the sun replace the dark, green-hued look of the previous Matrix iteration, signifying a brighter future for humanity.

The Oracle’s Prophecy For Sati Confirms Her Importance

Priyanka Chopra in Matrix Resurrections

When Neo visits the Oracle in The Matrix Revolutions, she addresses Sati’s presence by stating her belief that the child will one day play a significant role in the relationship between man and machine. Although vague, this prophesy positions Sati for greatness within the simulation; with her power to alter the Matrix and the likelihood that she was raised by the Oracle following the events of Revolutions, it’s highly likely that she would have fully tapped into her powers by the time of the fourth film.

As previously mentioned, there has been no confirmation of any version of the Oracle appearing in The Matrix Resurrections. However, many viewers are speculating that an older version of Sati will play a big role in the story, with actress Priyanka Chopra (whose part in the film is still undisclosed) possibly playing her. Chopra’s character can be seen in the Matrix Resurrections trailer, armed with a copy of Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass. If Chopra really is playing Sati, it’s possible that Neo has sought her out to learn more about the memories he’s lost after becoming addicted to the infamous blue pills. This places Sati in the same narrative role as the Oracle in the first film, suggesting that perhaps Sati has now become the Matrix’s new bearer of future knowledge, and an important contact for the human resistance.
