“WTF? Where’s the Fun?” is the latest single from songwriter/vocalist Vineet, a performative polymath of a kind who’s never heard a musical genre he doesn’t like. We haven’t heard a heavy metal track from Vineet yet though and probably never will. His funk driven new single never sounds like an uncomfortable stab into foreign territory, however, but instead a comfortable nod to a well-known friend. The arrangement calls upon time-tested elements of the genre without ever striking a false note and some individual performances, like the guitar, are especially inspired.
The bass, however, is noteworthy. It rolls with a sprightly line and fat sound never dominating the mix but, nonetheless, serving as a marquee component. The drums aren’t quite its equal but more than adequate. It is apparent that Vineet’s voice and lyrics are the center of this performance and the production does a lot to influence such a hearing. He isn’t ever working against the arrangement, however, but rather sings with the music with memorable effect.
The chorus is hard-hitting and to the point. Vineet, however, reserves the verses for a bit of light lyrical commentary urging listeners to “seize the day”. It’s easy to lose perspective in life. If large scale tragedies such as the COVID-19 pandemic teach us nothing, they should underscore the fact we are guaranteed nothing past the grave and we only have this moment. Let us make the most of our time rather than maneuvering for more.
His promotional clip for the song says the same thing – in its own way. He is in full playful mood here with a video incorporating footage from various Marvel movies with the principles dancing for viewers. Many listeners may not care much for his co-opting of popular cultural figures, fictional or not, but others will appreciate the devil may care attitude.
It may be easy for listeners to miss the craftsmanship underpinning this tune. Its pleasing veneer masquerades Vineet’s command of songwriting fundamentals without ever sounding staid or predictable. We anticipate the payoff the song’s chorus provides but it doesn’t dilute its impact. If anything, it makes the moment even more satisfying because he pulls it off so well. The instruments are threaded seamlessly into a greater whole.
It’s an all-around entertaining and rewarding package. Vineet’s new single “WTF? Where’s the Fun?” doesn’t intend on remaking the world, but his desire to reach the listener is one of many endearing points. His superb invocation of the funk style doesn’t sound like a square peg trying to fit itself into a round hole but, instead, another expression of his apparently boundless musical imagination.

Let’s hope he always responds to the world around him in such a powerful way. “WTF? Where’s the Fun?” connects with our everyday lives on a level we can understand rather than some high-handed effort removed from popular appeal. It is never false, however, and feels like a honest expression of the songwriter’s passions and heart. Vineet deserves considerable success on the back of this song and let’s hope it comes his way.
