Drake’s new record is breaking records.
The Toronto-based rapper’s latest offering, Certified Lover Boy, boasted the highest number of streams in a single day on both the Spotify and Apple Music platforms. The announcements came on Friday from the apps themselves, who apparently watch everything we click, via their social media arms.
First came Spotify.
Then Apple Music.
The folks at Tidal didn’t get specific with numbers, but they did offer a supportive missive of their own.
Drake’s Certified Lover Boy victory demotes his own release, Scorpion from 2018, to second place. For Spotify, it sends Kanye West’s newly-released and controversial Donda into the bronze medal slot and into fourth place on Apple Music.
This is significant, as many have watched for months as Certified Lover Boy and Donda seemed to dance around one another, waiting for the other to drop first. Furthermore, many have parsed lyrics on Certified to contain some Kanye-directed disses. The track “7am On Bridle Path” features the rhyme, “You over there in denial, we not neck and neck/It’s been a lot of years since we seen you comin’ correct.” It continues, “Give that address to your driver, make it your destination/‘Stead of just a post out of desperation.”
