A happy weekend to anyone who is a fan of Schitt’s Creek, Annie Murphy, or burning down sexist sitcom tropes: AMC has renewed the show Kevin Can F**k Himself for a second season, according to reports.
The first season of Kevin Can F**k Himself — which I started watching Friday night and plan to continue binging the rest of the weekend — stars Murphy as Allison McRoberts, a tormented sitcom wife who violently upends the genre. The show, as described in V.F., “toggles between an old-school multicam network sitcom and a gritty, single-camera prestige streaming drama.” The effect is perhaps cathartic to any woman who has smiled through a barrage of sexist comments disguised as humor.
“It has been a little concerning how quickly and easily I can smash a glass on the wall and kick over garbage cans while screaming,” Murphy previously told V.F. “I think as women we’re all kind of suppressing a lot, so it is really lovely to have a smashing-things outlet for that.”
The show, created by Valerie Armstrong, features Eric Petersen as Murphy’s infantile husband. It has an admirable 81% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the New Yorker’s Alexandra Schwartz took a more critical approach, arguing that Allison is “a pawn, not a character, freed from one set of absurd genre constraints only to become shackled to another.”
Nonetheless, Kevin Can F*** Himself appears to have found its audience. It “was the biggest series launch in the 14-month history of AMC+ and drove more signups for the streaming bundle during its run than any other show,” according to the Hollywood Reporter, citing AMC Networks. The second season will premiere next year, Deadline reports.
For fans, this news hopefully makes up for the sad cancellation of the Schitt’s Creek farewell tour.
