New on Netflix: The Best Movies and TV Shows Coming in September

The platform’s coming attractions include season 3 of Sex Education, the action flick Kate, and School of Rock.

While unknowns proliferate in our day to day lives, you can at least escape this September into the certainty of a fresh slate of Netflix titles. Sex Education, for one, takes us back to its lush landscape of fairly low stakes teen conundrum with a much-awaited season 3. There’s also a bit of thrill and violence to top things off, with Kate, a new female-led action flick starring Birds of Prey actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead. And for those who were disappointed by the abrupt ending of the dating show Love On the Spectrum, about young people on the autism spectrum looking for love, season 2 is on its way.

Additionally, the creators of The Haunting of Hill House are back with another spooky series—Midnight Mass, starring Hill House alum Kate Siegel, plus Friday Night Lights’ Zach Gilford and Legion’s Hamish Linklater. Comedy big shots Melissa McCarthy and Chris O’Dowd take a dramatic turn as a husband and wife pair in The Starling, contending with loss and, apparently, a “feisty bird.” Dear White People returns for a final chapter, with Volume 4, tapping into the latest nostalgia trend with a 90’s musical format. And Jaws, and its three sequels, will become available later in the month, too.

Here’s the rest of what’s coming up on Netflix in September, beginning with a few stand-outs.

School of Rock (September 1)

If you loved (or even hated) Mike White’s popular HBOMax series The White Lotus, maybe it’s time to bask in the family-friendly delights of some of his earlier work as a screenwriter. Directed by Richard Linklater and starring Jack Black as an elementary private school substitute teacher who brings his rock n’ roll bonafides to a captive new audience, this classic is a crowd pleaser that seriously holds up.

Turning Point: 9/11 and the War on Terror (September 1)

This new doc is especially timely, given both the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the chaos unfolding in Afghanistan since the U.S. military’s withdrawal and the Taliban’s takeover. Director Brian Knappenberger focuses not only on the day itself, but the origins of al-Qaida and the U.S.’s aggressive response to the attacks, both in the Middle East and at home.

Kate (September 10)
By Jasin Boland/Netflix.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead is back in action. This time, the charismatic star plays Kate, a ruthless assassin who is poisoned and must hunt down her attackers in the less than 24 hours she has to live. She also finds a sidekick in the former of the daughter of one of her victims in a film that seems to recall the plot of the recent action flick Gunpowder Milkshake—also on Netflix and starring Karen Gillan. See for yourself which one of these ladykillers kicks more ass.

Sex Education: Season 3 (September 17)
By Sam Taylor/Netflix.

The horny high schoolers are back. Season 3 of the hit show about sexually active (for the most part) British youths and the adults who struggle to understand them–shot, somewhat confusingly, not in the UK but in lush and dreamy Switzerland—returns with its resident virgin teen sex therapist Otis (Asa Butterfield) finally engaging in casual hook ups. The Crown’s Gillian Anderson is also back as his newly pregnant (actual) sex therapist mother, Jean.

What’s Leaving Netflix in September 2021:

Farewell, good friends. In September, we’re losing auteur works like Noah Baumbach’s coming-of-age debut Kicking and Screaming and Jeff Nichols’ sci-fi flick Midnight Special. The Edgar Wright-directed and Mary Elizabeth Winstead-starring cult hit, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, is out as well. A few crowd pleasers (and their sequels) will go, too, including Star Trek, The Karate Kid, and Kung Fu Panda.
