Nearly two weeks after Prince George’s appearance at the Euro Cup finals in a suit and tie, the young royal has an opportunity to show off more casual attire. In advance of his eighth birthday Thursday, Kensington Palace has released a photo of smiling George wearing a striped blue and orange polo, sitting on the hood of a Land Rover Defender. The photo was taken by Kate Middleton at Anmer Hall, the Cambridge family retreat on the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk.
On Instagram, the family’s account shared the picture with a few emojis and an exclamation point to indicate a bit of surprise at how much the future king has grown. According to the Telegraph, the family plans to celebrate his birthday privately.
The inclusion of the Land Rover was likely a reference to George’s late great-grandfather, Prince Philip, who owned multiple versions of the sport utility vehicle throughout his life. In 2003, Philip began designing a modified Defender that would be used as a hearse at his funeral in April 2021. Due to coronavirus restrictions, the guest list at the funeral was limited, and neither George, nor his siblings Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis were able to attend.
In addition to his appearance at the Euro Cup, George recently joined William at the Sandringham Road Race on Father’s Day, along with Charlotte. The summer term at Thomas’s Battersea, the London independent school where George and Charlotte are students, concluded in early July. In June, the Daily Mail reported that Kate and Prince William were considering sending George to a boarding school in Berkshire in the fall, adding that the couple has been quietly looking at school and new homes.
