Red carpet fashion is back! Here are all the dreamiest dresses at Cannes Film Festival so far

If you were left feeling slightly sartorially flat after a predominantly-virtual awards season, a delayed (and scaled-back) Met Gala and two seasons worth of digital-first fashion weeks, you’ll no doubt be thrilled to hear that red carpet glamour is back – courtesy of the Cannes Film Festival.

Forever the chicest, most classically glamorous red carpet of the year, after last year’s disappointing but understandable Covid cancellation, this year’s fortnight-long event kicked off yesterday on the Croisette.

Playing host to a number of major names already, it seems as though we weren’t the only ones to miss the aesthetic drama of a red carpet as some of our favourite celebrities came armed with their fashion A-game from day one.

Undoubtedly one of the most striking looks so far came courtesy of model Bella Hadid, who arrived in an extraordinarily chic vintage Jean Paul Gaultier look from the brand’s spring/summer 2002 collection. Providing a very welcome first-night fashion *moment*, the dress featured a white column body with sheer black fabric inserts forming a halter neck neckline which tumbled down her back in dramatic carpet-sweeping style.

Joining her was actress Jessica Chastain, who opted for some old-school Hollywood glamour on night one in a black strapless Dior Couture gown which was corseted and flared out into a voluminous full skirt.

Others in attendance so far include Candice Swanepoel who wore a sheer, flared Etro jumpsuit with heavy embellishment, Dame Helen Mirren who joined Farhana Bodi in injecting the carpet with some colour via a canary yellow Dolce & Gabbana gown.
