Fashion, specifically when it comes to social media style, can have a very specific Baader–Meinhof phenomenon flare. It works so well, I’m usually opening a package of the latest TikTok craze before I even realize I purchased it. This shopping fugue state is the result of a never-ending death scroll, encouraging you to add to cart as fast as possible. The lifecycle of these It-fashion items are short. If you don’t act fast, all you’re left with is whiplash, regret, and Cool Girls on Instagram taunting you in those sold-out Gimaguas shorts, twirling on your discover page.

The impulse to avoid fashion FOMO is real. Last summer I emerged with 72 pairs of tie-dye sweatpants. Over the holidays I became acutely aware of my lacking mule collection. Earlier this month I had a quarter-life crisis fueled by Olivia Rodrigo-approved tennis skirts. Most recently, the item that’s clogging my feed is nowhere near my budget, but it is nonetheless consuming my life. I’m scared, I’m confused, and with its $6,000 price tag, I’m feeling financially bereft.

First premiered on Miu Miu’s virtual spring runway, this beaded mini skirt is making the rounds. Its popularity points to our collective desire to emerge this summer, vaccinated and wearing the most obnoxious party clothes imaginable (while simultaneously leaving little to the imagination with its fourteen-inch length). Sitting low on the hips, the skirt’s rise is nostalgic of both the ’60s and the early 2000s, giving us that retro silhouette we’ve been territorial of ever since Gen Z started acting like they discovered low-rise jeans. It’s also shiny, attracting our low attention spans. Dubbed the Cady skirt (which makes me want to believe it’s named after Lindsay Lohan’s seminal role as Cady Heron in 2004’s Mean Girls), it doesn’t speak to us on a deep, emotional level so much as it fills a carnal need to wear something purely indulgent after months in isolation.

There’s so much hype circulating around the Going Out Top, we think it’s time that its southern counterpart receives the same attention. She’s fun, she’s flirty, and she can be worn with a Brandy Melville tank top, a fiscally sound location to spill your drink on. I’m calling it now: let’s all invest in ostentatious mini skirts this summer.

My brain is doing mental gymnastics trying to figure out how to justify paying the equivalent of half a used Prius to own this exact Miu Miu skirt. I’m scared to even admit I want such a luxurious item, but here I am, checking my bank account. Is capitalism sinking its teeth into me? Like with anything that goes wrong in modern culture, I blame social media. Specifically, I blame all the influencers that are out here influencing me—scamming me?—into sinking myself into debt so I can shimmy in sequins. So far we’ve seen everyone from Hailey Bieber to OG style blogger Susie Lau to rising star Marsai Martin wearing the style. Worth it?

I haven’t quite concluded that. Value-based shopping is rightfully on the rise, with brands and retailers realizing now more than ever that customers want to put their dollar toward ethical purchases. We should treat every purchase with its social and environmental impact in mind, but we’re also experiencing unprecedented mental fatigue, where fashion can be a source of joy. As temperatures rise and the world reopens, maybe going out means something different to us. If you end up wearing this skirt for your next girls night out, I hope you wear it more than once.

We suspect inspired dupes to follow shortly, but if you actually have an answer to the question “who’s your favorite billionaire?”, you’re more than welcome to shop the Miu Miu source. Personally, I won’t be investing in the Cady but I’ll double tap from afar and smile sweetly at those who do. Meanwhile, I’ll be perusing a few shiny alternatives to satiate those of us who don’t have 6k to spare, if only for my mental health.
