Exclusive Interview with Terron Brooks

Welcome, Terron! Thanks for speaking with us today! To start off, tell us a little bit about your most recent project “The Soul of Broadway”. How did this project come about?

I thought about this idea 4 or 5 years ago. I would hear from time to time how some of my creative peers would perceive Broadway as “corny.” I thought how could I create something accessible for all, including those who didn’t share my affinity for Broadway. We wanted to take these iconic songs from musicals and breathe a life into them aside from the characters they were written for. I had a vision of communicating the songs to a wider audience, putting a spotlight on lyrics that are so universal and inspiring. We were rebellious and free with our approach. I wanted to make the songs personal on a soul level. The driving force is making music that uplifts and can be a light in darker times. Broadway is known for telling stories. I wanted to weave mine in these songs.

We just listened to the first single, “Tomorrow” and it’s lovely. Does this song have any special meaning to you?

Well, thank you for listening. The song does have special meaning in so many ways. I connect personally because at 9 my son was diagnosed with autism and my wife and I went through a whirlwind of transforming moments as parents and people. My son has taught me to take one day at a time and no matter the storm currently, the sun does eventually come out. And in the times of uncertainty we’ve faced as a human race this past year, the song speaks to hope that things will get better and I believe they are. It’s about faith and perspective.

What are you most looking forward to this year as the world opens up?

I love traveling. I love hotels. I love people. So connection for sure with family, audiences. My children are going back to school and have social outlets that are healthy and fulfilling. Disneyland! Lol! Just enjoying more of the freedoms we were robbed of. And knowing that people can get back to work, especially in my industry puts a smile on my face.

We hear that you also just launched a new podcast, Honest Answers. Tell us more about it!

Well we have a phenomenal first season line up. From my co-star in the Emmy award winning mini-series The Temptations, LEON to Tony winners Hamilton”s Renée Elise Goldsberry  and The Cher Show’s Stephanie J Block to Icon Sheila E to name a few. I love highlighting the best in people. But I believe to get there we have to be ok with being our authentic honest selves. I was curious about the questions we all as humans ask ourselves. So, I didn’t want the focus to be on the guests’ resume, what they do. I was intrigued by the concept of who the person is. I named it honest answers to encourage the guests to let down their guard and speak their truth. I think coming out of the year we’ve had, people are ready to share what they’ve learned about themselves and the world they have experienced with new eyes. I’m always on the journey of accepting who I am now on the way to where I want to go. Takes honesty to do that.
