Lizzo’s Reminder to Commit to 1 Intentional Act of Antiracism a Day Is an Important One

Lizzo is here to remind allies that antiracism is a lifelong commitment, and daily action matters in helping to dismantle structural racism and even saving lives. “Racism isn’t a black-and-white photo or antiquated idea, it’s a system that is very well alive today and works really well in this country,” the singer said in an Instagram video on Thursday.

“Maybe it won’t make the biggest change in the world, but one change in your life can change your mind and maybe save someone’s life.”

Lizzo also explained that “putting ‘BLM’ in your bio and posting a black square is no longer the bare minimum.” “You have to do an intentional act of anti-racism every single day,” she said. She went on to give examples of what intentional actions look like, including donating to bail out a protester, buying from a POC-owned business, or standing up for someone getting harassed for the color of their skin. Whether you choose to read a book about the history of racial inequality in America or order takeout from a Black-owned restaurant, make daily habits out of your antiracist actions to contribute towards positive change.

“This is the new bare minimum, everybody,” Lizzo continued in her video. “Maybe it won’t make the biggest change in the world, but one change in your life can change your mind and maybe save someone’s life.” Watch the clip in full above.
