Sandra Oh Delivers a Poignant Speech at #StopAsianHate Rally: “I Am Proud to Be Asian”

Sandra Oh is showing support for her community amid the rise of anti-Asian hate crimes. On Saturday, the Killing Eve star delivered an impassioned speech during a #StopAsianHate rally in Pittsburgh. “I am so happy and proud to be here with you, and thank you to all the organizers for organizing this just to give us an opportunity to be together and to stand together and to feel each other,” Sandra said while speaking to a crowd of masked people on the street. “For many of us in our community, this is the first time we are even able to voice our fear and our anger, and I really am so grateful to everyone willing to listen.”

Sandra noted that she understands that “many of us in our community are very scared,” but the “one way to get through our fear is to reach out to our communities.” She then encouraged everyone to take action if they “see one of our sisters and brothers in need,” before emphasizing that she’s “proud to be Asian” and leading the crowd in a chant.

A day before the rally, Sandra released a statement on Instagram in response to the horrific Atlanta-area spa shootings that took place on March 16. “Friends and fellow AAs, I send loving kindness and support to the families of the eight souls murdered in Georgia,” she wrote. “I am devastated and profoundly angry. I know many of you are scared, but let us not be afraid.” Several other stars like Daniel Dae Kim, Jamie Chung, and Sherry Cola have also used their platforms to call for a stop to hatred, racism, and violence against Asian Americans.
