“Fading Memories” by Emily Daccarett

A brooding western-like guitar enters the sonic atmosphere. It feels far off, tucked away like a forgotten town. Soon enough a slick mesh of lethargic movements and softer blends rolls into the forefront. The opening of “Fading Memories”, Emily Daccarett’s the lead single from Daccarett’s album Yours Always, is seamless and bridges the listener into both Daccarett’s inner musings and her powerful pop voice. “Fading Memories” slithers along like a seductive, film noir.

The whispering at the beginning is like the hushed voice inside one’s head going through years of angst and regret. Daccarett never lets on that she’s regretting things or that she’s embarrassed. She’s completely vulnerable in her delivery. The emotions stirring in her smokey-hued, bluesy voice matches the shadowy-like music bedrock. I loved the way this song moves, like an investigator on the loose and watching and taking notes in a nocturnal setting.

Her voice really wraps itself around the backing music, and the subtle percussion. It’s like a heartbeat, perfectly timed. I can see why singing for her is like breathing. She’s very natural-sounding and easy to engage. I felt like the music created this veil of mystery. It’s very intriguing and all the while you feel like you’re witnessing a bigger story than she’s letting you believe. You can keep pealing back those layers to the song in each listen, and I found that after a few more listens, I was really just ensconced with her voice and her storytelling than I was on the first listen. She’s rapturing. It’s like she has that perfect balance of emotional and intellectual fortitude in her artistry.

Daccarett is no stranger to making an impact with her art and music. Many of her songs have a panache to them – she blends her love of fashion and integrates the colors and artistry into her music. In her previous outings like the up tempo “Cannibal” and the bass grooving “Growin’ Addiction” she presents lofty pop synth alongside her sleek voice. She keeps you moving and there’s an unbreakable light shining at the center of her work. In other words, she has the ‘it’ factor. As a listener, I appreciated the way her songs, especially “Fading Memories”, connect on an emotional level, but also a really cool level. You feel like you’re in a movie, meandering around the set and almost floating amongst the lights.

Overall, “Fading Memories” is a solid pop song. I think it’s safe to say that Daccarett will be on many listeners’ radars in the coming months. Her style of music and songwriting is breaking out at the right time – people are really in the mood to put certain things behind them and push forward. “Fading Memories” fits that theme and compels the listener to ‘visit’ these emotional turning points, but not live there in eternity. In her youthful way, her mesmerizing approach, Daccarett gives us permission to clear away the attic of memories and stakes her claim on taking control of the nostalgia in our lives. It’s hard and there are many unknowns, but her voice and her presentation in “Fading Memories” boosts spirits.
