Forget the MCU, Netflix’s Thunder Force Just Gave Us Our New Favorite Superhero Duo

We’ve always thought that Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer were heroes, but now they’re really stepping into their super bag. The real-life pals are the stars of Netflix’s upcoming comedy film Thunder Force where they play two estranged childhood best friends whose unexpected reunion goes awry. Lydia (McCarthy) visits her former friend Emily Stanton (Spencer), a scientist who reveals that she’s created a genetic platform that gives ordinary people superpowers. Even though the scientist warns the other woman not to touch anything, Lydia accidentally doses herself with super-strength, and the two decide to team up as Chicago’s first superpowered team of crime-fighters. Together they taser and punch through their city to protect it from the supervillains bent on destroying it. (Which includes Jason Bateman with crab claws, so it can’t be all bad, am I right?)

Thunder Force was written and directed by Ben Falcone and will serve as his and McCarthy’s fifth project as a director-actress pair. Alongside Spencer, McCarthy, and Bateman, the film stars Bobby Cannavale, Pom Klementieff, Kevin Dunn, and Melissa Leo, with a cameo by Falcone, who gets tasered in the neck by Spencer in the trailer. They’re clearly giving the whole MCU and DCEU a run for their money when it comes to this superhero gig. Watch the trailer above and check out Thunder Force when it premieres on Netflix on April 9.
