We are back with a second installment of Extreme Glamour Tries, where Emma Hiley, Acting Business Director for GLAMOUR, embarks on a filler-filled adventure with Cosmetic Doctor Dr. Maurice Dray for a facial tweakment – jaw fillers.
The Procedure:
What are jaw fillers?
Jaw fillers otherwise known as nonsurgical jawline contouring, uses filler made of hyaluronic acid, which is naturally found in the skin. Injected into the dermis, the gel-like filler helps to smooth out wrinkles, plump and hydrate the skin. This can lessen the appearance of sagging, baggy skin around the jaw and reduce the effects of age-related volume loss in the lower face.
Jaw fillers are best performed with a cannula, which is a (rounded) blunt tube that deposits filler underneath the skin. Cannulas can be used to treat any part of the face, e.g. tear troughs, cheeks, as well as the jawline, without leaving bruising as it’s not as sharp as a needle.
What does the procedure involve?
- Preparations – marking and scanning to detect veins in the injecting area.
- Applying the numbing cream – to reduce the injecting sensation.
- The filler is injected into the target areas.
- Followed by a skin recovery massage and sheet mask.
Prices?
At Dr. Dray’s London clinic, prices can range from £500 per syringe.
Total for this treatment was £2,100.
The Verdict:
“My main concern was my jawline, which I feel has been dropping and sagging quite a bit in the last couple of years,” reveals Emma before her treatment. “I was looking for a bit more definition along the jaw. As far as the procedure I wasn’t so bothered about the needles as I was about any prospects of prolonged pain.
“I felt no pain as there was anaesthetic administered prior to treatment. However, once the numbing started to wear off, I could feel my jaw starting to feel tender, not dissimilar to a post trip to the dentist.
“I really liked the recovery sheet mask containing hyaluronic acid and collagen and it really appeared to reduce the immediate redness. I didn’t have any side effects or bruising and there was no down time. Dr Dray did reassure me that if I had any questions or anything I was concerned about I could always contact the clinic, but that was not necessary.
“The whole procedure lasted around 30 minutes and had immediate effects. As soon as I sat up, I felt my face looked more balanced and supported, my jawline more defined and my double chin had almost disappeared. It was effective enough to sculpt my jaw and chin into a more pronounced smile, but subtle enough that people wouldn’t be aware I’d had the tweakment.
“I would love to go back to tweak one of the sides more, for ultimate facial symmetry, but overall it was a pretty good outcome.”
The Aftercare:
Notably there’s no downtime and you can apply make-up immediately post procedure and go about life as you normally would, but it is advised to be gentle around the jaw area for the first 3-4 hours and avoid direct UV exposure. The filler can take up to two weeks to settle for full results. So if you don’t see that immediate chiselled finish, wait the fortnight to see the final results before you book a further appointment.
The Safety Need-to-know checklist:
Invasive procedures that involve needles are only worthwhile to research and ensure your safety first.
- Check credentials – make sure that your chosen practitioner is a trained and qualified professional registered with a medical association such as the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. If you can also check online reviews or ask to speak to a former client in person
- Keep things clean – make sure that your clinic setting is clean to avoid risk of infection.
- Know what is going in your jaw – make sure you know the name of the filler being injected so you cna check it is FDA approved or CE marked and be clear on any intolerances you have before the procedure
