Exclusive Interview with Codi Dillon

We are stoked to have you today. Tell us about your fall season so far! What are you up to?

This fall season is a little bit different for me in a lot of ways, as I am sure it is for most. Due to the virus I am not playing quite as many shows as I’m used to and I’m starting to get a bit of cabin fever because of it. I have released my debut album that I have been continuing to promote as well as starting some new projects as well.

The most underrated part of being creative?

The work and comprise it takes sometimes to show the “finished product,” so to speak. A lot of hard work goes into making big projects and executing your vision as an indie artist. Sometimes it takes compromises in certain aspects that kind of stray from your original idea. I am open to growing and changing the execution of a song or finding alternative meanings or meanings that may complete the original. It’s all about your ability to be flexible, and I feel like that can be overshadowed sometimes in how truly hard working an artist can be.

When are you at your personal best?

I am at my best when I have full 8 hours of sleep, some coffee in the morning, and am well rested and creatively inspired. I feel when I was in quarantine, I was able to really reconnect with myself, after getting so caught up in everyday life before the lockdown. I miss having those moments to just be openly free and creative, I rarely get those moments recently, but it’s times like that where I really feel most best.

How do you feel about genre labels?

I believe they are necessary to a standard, but however I feel like an artist can travel amongst several genres and piggyback off one genre while technically being with a main genre. They are important to the listeners to divide and know what they are going to get off what they are used to, although I think it’s very healthy for artists to fluctuate amongst stylistic choices of genre.

Hardest aspect of performing?

I think it’s the pre show set-up and pre-planning for a set. I find myself most anxious beforehand because I am such a perfectionist. I think since I fulfill many roles when performing, I’m doing it all by myself usually, so that adds the extra work to make sure the set runs smoothly.
