Exclusive Interview with Nicki Kris

Hi Nicki! Great to have you here today!

Great to be here as well!

What is the most meaningful song/album you have ever written?

I’d have to go with my Heartbeat Album. It’s the album that I had always wanted to write and record when I dreamed about being a recording artist in my teens. I also think every song on that album has a purpose in and of itself.

Do you get attached to some songs more than others?

Absolutely! There are some songs even today that give me goosebumps and others that I think about wanting to maybe re-record and change a bit.

Do you need to be in a certain mood to write?

Yes and no. I’m a binge writer. I’ve always been this way, which is great when I haven’t written anything in awhile and all of a sudden 5 songs are put down on paper in a span of hours or a few days. It can also be very challenging when I have a deadline and I need to write. I don’t like to be forced into things. I’d rather let them just happen. However, when crunch time hits I eventually come up with something.

Is there a song that brings you to tears?

I have a couple of my songs that I’ve yet to perform live mainly because I fear that I’m going to just lose it. Falling to Pieces, which was written initially as a response to the Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando. Which has become an anthem to promote healing after each subsequent mass shooting since the 2016 event. As well as, Call My Name, which was written as a tribute to Chester Bennington the lead singer of my favorite band, Linkin Park and a friends daughter, both who committed suicide in 2017.

What is a cause that is near and dear to your heart?

My new organization, Sister’s In Music that I co-founded with Artist Natalie Jean. The organization focuses on women in the music and entertainment industry encouraging collaborative educational opportunities, musical works, and performances. It’s important to Natalie and I that we use our platform to empower and encourage each other rather than put each other down.

 What makes you feel powerful?

Supporting and empowering other women in the music and entertainment industry.
