‘Hillbilly Elegy’ Trailer: Amy Adams, Glenn Close As Embattled Moms Ravaged By Addiction In Netflix Memoir Adaptation

Netflix today released the trailer for director Ron Howard’s Hillbilly Elegy, giving a first look at the film adaptation of J.D. Vance’s bestselling memoir, starring Amy Adams young woman struggling with opioid addiction and Glenn Close as her aging mother who steps in to raise grandson J.D.

As the adult J.D. Vance, Gabriel Basso, as the official synopsis states, plays the former Marine and current Yale Law student “on the verge of landing his dream job when a family crisis forces him to return to the southern Ohio home he’s tried to forget. J.D. must navigate the complex
dynamics of his Appalachian family, including his volatile relationship with his mother Bev (Amy Adams), who’s struggling with addiction. Fueled by memories of his grandmother Mamaw (Glenn Close), the resilient and whip-smart woman who raised him, J.D. comes
to embrace his family’s indelible imprint on his own personal journey.”

Netflix will give Hillbilly Elegy a limited theatrical run in November before it begins streaming Nov. 24. around Thanksgiving.

In addition to Close, Adams and Basso, the film features Haley Bennett, Freida Pinto, Bo Hopkins and Owen Asztalos.

Directed by Howard with a screenplay by Vanessa Taylor based on Vance’s book, Hillbilly Elegy is exec produced by Diana Pokorny, Julie Oh, William M. Connor, J.D. Vance, produced by Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and Karen Lunder. Music is by Hans Zimmer & David Fleming.
