Parisian layers is the suits-all hairstyle that will flatter any face shape (and it’s inspired by Lily Collins, obviously)

The clothes! The French escapism! Chef Gabriel! Netflix’s Emily in Paris is all anyone’s talking about right now. In fact, I stayed up until 3am bingeing it all in one go and I have absolutely zero regrets.

During my marathon Netflix sesh, I couldn’t help but notice the flattering hairstyle worn by both Lily Collins’s Emily and Ashley Park’s Mindy. I’m dubbing the look ‘Parisian layers’ and after speaking to a few hairdressers, I’m certain we’re all going to be emulating the look.

“The Parisian Layers look is so on-trend and I have clients who are asking for it in the salon right now,” revealed Celebrity Session Stylist, James Alfie Parr. See, told you.

Gem Jones, founder of Taylor Rose Hair Extensions London, says the look is so popular because it suits and flatters every face shape going. “We may not be able to sashay around Paris like Emily, but we can definitely get her hairstyle,” she said. “We absolutely love the effortless finish of Parisian hair, perfectly undone and oozes cool girl chic. A soft, long layer gives the ideal amount of shape and movement without looking overly styled; a key factor in achieving the perfect Parisian finish.”

Next time you head into the salon, Elle Clancy at Larry King Notting Hill advises asking for a ‘really soft, undone, textured cut’ and keeping the ends blunt but softening them into layered sections. ‘Ask your stylist for either a point cutting in or if your hair is thicker, ask them to use thinners – or even razor cut – to really give the ends the undone look whilst removing weight. Open up the front slightly by slicing down from below the chin.”

Once you’ve got the cut sorted, there are a few simple styling tips you can master at home to emulate Emily’s look. Here, Elle shares the simple styling hacks to get the look…

  • Use a full effect mousse for volume but also texture, creating the beach texture teamed with Larry King’s Volume Mist (all on wet hair) and rough dry with head upside down to create as much volume as possible
  • Then taking the fringe section from the corner of your eyebrows, pull forward and flatten down using a round brush
  • Then take the crown section and blow-dry up, creating a bit of a 60s shape
  • Keep the sizes of the hair flat and rough dry the rest
  • The more you smooth out the hair before creating a wave, the less it will hold as you’re taking it too far away from its natural texture
  • Using a Dyson Corrale, straight the hair creating S shapes all through the hair while flat ironing, or bend the straightener in the shape of stairs (inside then out) whilst moving down the hair
  • Leave the ends more straight to really give the undone look

To prolong the look, spray a few sprays of a texture mist through the roots and ends of hair and rough dry to recreate volume and texture.
