Content creators, influencers, and notable gaming authorities have been sent scale models for the Xbox Series X and Series S by Microsoft, but one of the flaws in the Xbox Series X’s design doesn’t allow for the circular stand to be removed. The Xbox Series X gives players the option to the console stand straight up or to lay it on its side, but this slight hiccup may force a lot of Xbox Series X owners to display their consoles like a tower.
The Xbox Series X was first revealed at The 2019 Game Awards and its design was mocked as the internet compared its rectangular form to that of a refrigerator. Gamers changed their minds once up-close images surfaced from the Xperion in Germany of real-world images of the Xbox Series X. The sleek and majestic design of the console was praised for going against the flow of modern-day console designs. However, some still criticized the console for its awkward footprint as Microsoft had yet to show the console is capable of being laid on its side.

After Microsoft revealed the Xbox Series S along with the prices and release dates for both next-gen consoles, a series of internet tech reviewers and online gaming authorities were given the opportunity to review and answer questions about the outward appearance and size of each console. Ryan McCaffrey, the Executive Previews Editor for IGN, posted to Twitter that he had been one to receive the console models. One of the most frequently asked questions was whether the circular stand at the bottom could be removed, to which McCaffrey responded he could not find a way to remove the stand, and “I just confirmed with Microsoft that it is indeed not removable.”
One of the most common questions I’ve gotten is if the round stand on the bottom of the Series X is removable, in the event you choose to lay it on its side.
I couldn’t find a way to take it off, and I just confirmed with Microsoft that it is indeed not removable. So just FYI!

Other reviewers posted videos of the Xbox Series X model and showed that it has rubber feet on its side proving the console can still function while laid on its side. The problem with the unremovable stand is that the console becomes disproportionate when laid on its side making one end of the Xbox Series X look awkward. The fan is placed at the top of the console which is not obstructed when placed on its side, so it makes little sense that the bottom stand cannot be removed.
With the Xbox Series X’s release date being two months away, there is no way Microsoft can change the design regardless of how many complaints are made. There will inevitably be a handful of people who attempt to forcibly remove the bottom stand, which Microsoft shouldn’t have to warn people not to do. Even if it isn’t there for any integral reason, Xbox Series X owners should not tamper with the physicality of their consoles. Yes, it’s ugly, but don’t spend $500 just to break the console.
