Steam Versions of ‘Doom’ And ‘Doom II’ Updated to Include ‘SIGIL’, Widescreen Support And More

Back in January, Bethesda gave classic Doom fans a treat with a new update that added a more modern flair to Doom and Doom II, as well as mod support and John Romero’s SIGIL add-on. That update was unfortunately relegated to those games on the Bethesda Launcher. But now, the publisher has granted the same update to the Steam versions of the game, as well!

Now, when you go to play either game, you’ll be presented with an option to launch the DOS version as well as the new Unity ports that get all the goodies. Don’t worry, your WADs will still be fine in either version.

Here’s a rundown of what to expect, alongside 60fps with widescreen support. You can also read the full patch notes on the Slayers Club website:

  • A crosshair that changes color when targeting an enemy. This can be turned off in the menu.
  • Ultra-Violence+ difficulty on the level select screen, with fast enemies like Nightmare and deathmatch/co-op only weapons spawning in.
  • A fix for the logic error that prevented the message “Picked up a medikit that you REALLY need!” from being displayed if you grab one while below 25 health.
  • A fix for the bug that made Doomguy’s shocked “ouch face” only appear in very specific circumstances, rather than whenever you take 20 points of damage or more.
  • Split-screen deathmatch is based on “deathmatch 3.0”, meaning weapons remain after being picked up, with ammo and items respawn after 30 seconds (save for invulnerability and invisibility).
  • The end-of-level timer now includes milliseconds for speedrunners.
