Megan Rapinoe Answers the Proust Questionnaire

What is your idea of perfect happiness? “Until we are all free, we are none of us free.” —Emma Lazarus. Perfect happiness exists only in my imagination at the moment.

Which historical figure do you most identify with? I don’t see myself in those who have come before me, rather I understand and am grateful that because of them, I am able to be who I am.

Which living person do you most admire? My mom.

What is your greatest extravagance? Clothes and food.

What is your favorite journey? Any journey that takes me to some place new. Could be a restaurant, a country, a new part of town. It could be a book or an article, or a film. Also, any journey that takes me “home.”

On what occasion do you lie? I have been known to leave a detail or two out of a story to bolster my position.

What do you dislike most about your appearance? My eyebrows are the exact color of my forehead. When not filled in, they make me look like an egg with a nose and mouth.

Which words or phrases do you most overuse? My mom would say curse words.

When and where were you happiest? Anywhere with my girlfriend, Sue.

What is your greatest regret? The premise of regret implies an impossible standard of perfection. Perfection does not exist, and we all know that we are conditioned to strive for it. So, I try to do my best, and then try to reflect openly and honestly, so the next time, my best will be better. (Note to self: Revisit this after my conversation with Sue.)

What or who is the greatest love of your life? Myself. If I am to love anyone or anything as deeply as I desire, I must first love myself.

Which talent would you most like to have? Singing. Like Adele-sing, not just average sing.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I wish I wasn’t so rash, but would I be me if I wasn’t?

What do you consider your greatest achievement? I am very proud of the work I do, and will continue to do, fighting for equality.

If you were to die and come back as a person or thing, what do you think it would be? A dominant lesbian dolphin. Right?

If you could choose what to come back as, what would it be? I would run this life of mine back.

What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery? For me, it would be inaction in the face of injustice of any kind, knowing I could have done something.

What is your favorite occupation? I don’t feel like I have ever had a job, and I hope it stays that way forever.

What is your most marked characteristic? My unwavering confidence, warranted or not.

What do you most value in your friends? Humor and honesty. And, like me, they always think the unnecessary last drink is a great idea.

Who are your heroes in real life? Anyone and everyone fighting for equality for themselves and others.

What is it that you most dislike? When people chew their food loudly.

What is your motto? Everyone has the responsibility to make the world a better place in whatever way they are able to be most impactful.
