Blackpink’s makeup artist shares stories behind the beloved looks in the ‘How You Like That’ music video

K-pop group Blackpink recently dropped a new song called How You Like That, and its music video not only has been viewed more than 300 million times but has also inspired fans all over the world to recreate the stunning makeup featured it in.

In a new video interview with Allure Korea, Blackpink’s go-to makeup artist, Lee Myeong-Seon aka Maeng, shared behind-the-scenes stories on how the beloved looks came to be.

Turns out, members Jisoo, Rosé, Lisa, and Jennie are vocal about how they want their makeup to be. “Usually, the members talk about what they want to do,” Maeng revealed in the interview. “We’ve been working together for a long time, and we’ve already tried so many looks.” Here’s a deeper look at some of the looks they had thoughts on.

1. Jisoo’s Dots

Because the hair, outfits, and set in the music video were so colourful, Maeng strayed away from rainbow accents in favor of geometrical and 3D ones, like Jisoo’s dots. Maeng shared they were actually Jisoo’s idea. She brought references to the shoot for the teasers, and the look worked out so well that it was used in the music video, too.

To create them for the teasers, Maeng drew on the dots with a black eyeliner pencil before going over them with a liquid liner. However, small, black circular gems were adhered for the music video because they were more noticeable on camera.

2. Rosé’s Silver Falsies

For the modern hanbok scene, Maeng balanced out the boldness of everything by matching Lisa’s eye shadow to her watermelon pink wig and swiped on a rich scarlet statement lipstick.

Rosé, on the other hand, had a less obvious zing to it. Instead of catching light on her eyes with glitter, Maeng took an unexpected approach. Ultra-thin silver falsies were glued just below Rosé’s lower lashes. They were so subtle you might have missed them, but they surely made Rosé’s eyes twinkle in the final seconds of the music video.

3. Jennie’s Blue Gems

One of the most recreated looks from “How You Like That” originally started as spots of blue shadow on the inner corners of Jennie’s eyes. They didn’t appear under the lights as well as Jennie hoped, so Maeng tacked coordinating blue gems on top of the shadow. Then, she painted on sharp, straight wings and added gems next to the tails, too.

4. Lisa’s Bedazzled Lips

For Lisa’s solo scene, Maeng wanted to emphasise the rapper’s lips, specifically her cupid’s bow and bottom lip, to complement her outfit. Blackpink’s favourite nail artist Park Eunkyung aka Unistella was on set, and Maeng ended up finding the perfect leaf-shaped jewels in her kit. (I’ve gotten a peek into Park’s stash, and it’s a dreamland of stones in every shape, size, and colour imaginable.)

5. Jennie’s Crystal Teardrop

Knowing she’d have strands of diamonds in her hair for her solo scene, Jennie wanted to have something equally as glitzy for her face. Enter the crystal teardrop. It’s not just one rhinestone, though. Maeng arranged various sizes and colors of gems to form the shape. Then, she made sure to keep the rest of Jennie’s makeup simple to let all the stone shine.
