Daniel Brühl was excited to finally wear Baron Zemo’s iconic purple mask in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Phase 4 will be the beginning of a new era in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and not only from the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame. The MCU will move to the small screen in Phase 4 thanks to Disney+, as the upcoming Marvel shows will be heavily tied to the ongoing MCU story. This is scheduled to begin later this year with the release of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
The first MCU Disney+ show stars Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan, as Falcon/Captain America and Bucky Barnes, respectively. It will also see them come face to face with a former foe, Baron Zemo. Their stories intertwined during Captain America: Civil War, but Zemo’s return will see him grow closer to his comic counterpart. Not only will he go by Baron Zemo in the series (instead of Helmut Zemo), early footage for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier showed Brühl wearing the comic-accurate purple mask.

The first look at Brühl in Zemo’s mask came at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, before production even began on the Disney+ series. The actor is now sharing his excitement about finally putting it on. Collider recently spoke to Brühl and asked him about returning to the MCU for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Based on his response, he’s very excited to be back, wearing the mask, and continuing Zemo’s story:
I remember that Kari Skogland, the director, came to Budapest and we recorded something with me being Zemo, and I was very happy and enthusiastic to see the mask. I was incredibly thrilled to go back because I remember that I had a lot of fun being in something completely different and getting to explore the MCU and become part of that. I have the fondest memories of collaborating with all of these wonderful actors, and to see Sebastian Stan again, and Anthony Mackie, this time around, and to come back to something which, on the one hand, felt common and known, and on the other hand, being something completely new and something fresh.
Following the SDCC debut of Zemo’s mask, those who weren’t in Hall H only got to see the sneak peek from pictures of the panel. Thankfully, Marvel Studios shared an official look at Brühl in the mask a few months later as part of the Expanding the Universe special that was on Disney+ at its launch. Zemo has since been seen again multiple times in set photos and momentarily in the short MCU Disney+ teaser from the Super Bowl. However, it has only been in the early sneak peek that he’s been shown wearing the mask.
With the majority of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier‘s plot details still under wraps, Zemo’s role in the series has become a bit of a question mark. He is traditionally a villain in the comics and has been featured as such in the MCU already, so it would make sense for him to fill that void on Disney+ too. But, several batches of set photos appear to indicate that Zemo could be working with Falcon and Winter Soldier instead of against them. Fans will have to wait for more information on The Falcon and the Winter Soldier to be released to know for sure how Zemo factors into the series. Whether he’s an ally, a villain, or a mixture of both, there is no question he’ll wear the mask.
