10 More Things G-Eazy Can’t Live Without

00:00

Just about being cozy, and comfy at the crib.

00:02

It’s cozy time.

00:03

Yo, what’s up GQ, I’m Gerald

00:06

and I’m back for round two to show you

00:07

my at home essentials.

00:09

[upbeat music]

00:13

First essential, you know,

00:14

it’s kind of a piece of my uniform,

00:15

a piece of my self is my A’s hat

00:18

that I pretty much wear everyday.

00:19

Especially when I’m away from home, from the Bay,

00:22

it’s kind of just like a thing

00:24

that ties me to home and reminds me of

00:26

where I’m from.

00:27

I’ve probably owned over a hundred A’s hats.

00:30

This A’s hat is probably a few months in.

00:33

Still got some life left.

00:35

I had one that I was, like, wearing forever.

00:37

I let it get real, real, real dingy and dirty

00:40

and then I got a ton of crisp options,

00:42

and you know, making that decision on

00:44

which one to wear each day is just not as easy as it looks.

00:46

The biggest essential for me is my studio.

00:49

I’m very, very, very blessed.

00:51

I’m fortunate to have an at home studio.

00:55

This is the upstairs of my studio,

00:56

so it has my plaques, my Kobe jersey, some arcade games,

01:00

you know, it’s a vibe up here,

01:01

but then downstairs, in the real studio,

01:04

that’s where I go to completely work,

01:05

and like lock in and focus.

01:07

This room is like get the ear break,

01:09

get your mind off it for a second and come back fresh,

01:11

and then I go downstairs and it’s like,

01:13

there’s nothing but work down there.

01:14

My whole studio is lit up with heat lights.

01:16

So I’ll switch the colors of them,

01:17

depending on the song I’m working on,

01:19

depending on the vibe I’m in,

01:20

I don’t know what I would be doing with all this time

01:22

if I didn’t have my studio. I’d go crazy.

01:24

It’s obviously an outlet, a place to

01:27

express myself, and to pour myself into something.

01:31

I’m usually in the studio with, you know,

01:34

producers, A and R guy.

01:36

This was just me alone in my studio,

01:39

so all the sudden it was like, damn,

01:40

I’m gonna just make whatever I want to.

01:42

Use this time to freely explore creatively,

01:46

and break the rules, ’cause why not?

01:47

A big at home essential,

01:49

it’s just nice scented candles.

01:51

This is the big Le Labo Santal.

01:53

It just fills up the room with a real nice scent.

01:55

I didn’t know, but like a nice scented candle,

01:58

you’re only supposed to burn for what,

02:00

like 20 minutes? And then that fills the room

02:02

with the scent for an hour or two or whatever.

02:04

But, I like the vibe of having

02:07

a ton of candles lit, you know?

02:08

So, it all depends.

02:09

So, a big at home essential, and a way

02:12

I’ve spent a lot of time during quarantine,

02:15

has been reading. You know, sometimes

02:17

it’s hard with how busy life gets.

02:18

It gets hard to just sit down and focus,

02:21

but for me, reading over quarantine has been a practice

02:24

of remembering to focus, slow down, and chill.

02:29

I read Post Office, Charles Bukowski.

02:31

I’m reading a Farewell to Arms right now, Ernest Hemingway.

02:34

Chuck Palahniuk, Choke, and then,

02:37

probably the favorite thing I read over quarantine was

02:39

Acid for the Children. It’s a memoir by Flea,

02:41

from Red Hot Chili Peppers.

02:42

I love the Red Hot Chili Peppers as a fan,

02:44

but I got to know a whole lot more about Flea,

02:47

and his upbringing, his youth, his whole backstory.

02:50

I love Fitzgerald. I love, like, classic, timeless authors

02:55

that are that iconic, and I feel like,

02:57

going back, they really transport you to

02:59

a different time and place.

03:01

Reading has been a big thing over quarantine,

03:02

and like a great way to just

03:04

pass the time and chill at home.

03:06

Music is, you know, as essential

03:08

as anything is in my life,

03:09

and listening to music in the right way.

03:11

So, I have Marshall speakers all around the house.

03:13

They’re aesthetically pleasing.

03:15

They look like old amps, and the sound quality is great.

03:17

I listen to music every single day.

03:18

It’s one of the first things when I wake up.

03:21

Come downstairs, make my coffee,

03:22

put some music on. Immediately.

03:24

I’ve been building a record collection for a long time,

03:26

but there’s a part about putting a record on.

03:29

It’s like, yeah at the click of a button on your phone

03:31

you can have any song ever made anywhere,

03:35

but there’s a respect you put on the process.

03:38

You take that record out, you put the record on,

03:39

it’s an experience, it’s not just background music.

03:42

It’s an act of really appreciating the music itself.

03:44

But yeah, I mean, these are a few records.

03:47

Radiohead, The Bends.

03:49

Mac Dre, The Genie of the Lamp.

03:51

Nirvana Unplugged, which is one of the greatest.

03:54

A Love Supreme, John Coltrane.

03:56

Been listening to a lot of jazz lately.

03:58

And then one of my favorite albums of all time,

04:00

Midnight Marauders, A Tribe Called Quest.

04:03

Nina Simone, I’ve been listening to a lot of Nina.

04:05

A pretty eclectic range, but just some of the stuff

04:08

I’m into. Music is something that

04:09

just makes a home feel like a home.

04:11

I truly believe that.

04:12

It’s a atmosphere.

04:13

So, obviously a big essential, you know,

04:15

we’ve all been in the house.

04:16

Getting dressed is not what it used to be,

04:18

so sweatsuits are, you know, that’s a go to.

04:21

This one’s [indistinct] Supreme.

04:23

Anytime I find something I really like,

04:25

I usually just buy backups.

04:27

When you find something that you really like,

04:28

it’s like all right, let me level up.

04:30

So, I enjoy wine.

04:32

Just white, I like a sauvignon blanc,

04:34

something dry and crisp and citrusy.

04:37

Some friends of mine are like really into wine

04:38

who are staying with me at the house,

04:40

so just like, trying all different kinds.

04:42

So it’s just a dope part of the night,

04:45

like you’re cooking dinner and you have

04:46

a nice wine with it.

04:47

How often do we open a new bottle of wine?

04:49

Well that depends on the night.

04:51

[laughs]

04:51

Coffee is an essential.

04:54

I love coffee.

04:56

I can’t look at my phone, I can’t talk to anybody,

04:58

I can’t think before I’ve had a cup of coffee.

04:59

That’s just like, don’t bother me

05:00

until I’ve had my coffee.

05:02

Sometimes I’ll just do espresso, sometimes drip,

05:05

pour over coffee, sometimes a french press.

05:07

I like Peet’s Coffee.

05:08

I mean, Peet’s is from the Bay.

05:09

I just think coffee’s delicious,

05:11

and again it’s the process of,

05:13

you know, making a french press,

05:14

or the smell of espresso.

05:16

I usually just drink it black.

05:17

Maybe some cream. A dash, not a splash.

05:19

How many cups of coffee do I have a day?

05:21

That number, I’d not like to say,

05:23

but probably like four to five cups a day.

05:25

Way more than I should be having.

05:27

In the back yard I have a treadmill, some weights.

05:30

We joke and we call it Gerry’s Gymnasium.

05:32

For me, running is very meditative.

05:34

I mean, obviously you have to stay active

05:37

and find ways to exercise.

05:39

My treadmill is like, that’s where I go

05:41

to meditate and just find that calm.

05:43

I like running to film scores.

05:46

I love the Dark Knight score.

05:47

I love Requiem for a Dream,

05:49

that score’s one of my favorites.

05:50

Getting thirty minutes, like three miles,

05:52

thirty minutes in per day,

05:54

it just feels good after you get that done.

05:57

You gotta find ways to stay healthy, yeah?

05:58

During quarantine, I think a lot of us have had

06:00

the opportunity to inwardly reflect,

06:03

and decide what we want to change, or learn,

06:07

or evolve into. I’ve always wanted to

06:10

learn how to play piano, and learn how to sing,

06:13

and I’ve spent a lot of time working with a teacher

06:16

and a coach. I mean, I started just by ear.

06:19

I would put a record on and just start to play to it,

06:22

figure out what key it’s in, find the scale.

06:24

But spending the time to really work on that

06:27

and learn how to play piano.

06:28

A piano is like a … even as a piece of furniture,

06:31

is essential to at home, you know what I mean?

06:33

It makes my home feel like a home.

06:35

Pre-quarantine, we were doing Jazz Night at Gerry’s,

06:39

you know a little get together.

06:40

We’d all cook, have dinner, and then just play

06:43

and listen to jazz, and drink some wine,

06:46

and you know smoke and *beep*.

06:47

It was just kind of a thing that

06:49

ties everybody together in a way.

06:50

Its an upright, its an old one.

06:52

I didn’t wanna get something brand new

06:54

and fancy and clean.

06:55

I think there’s, like, a rustic quality

06:57

to an old piano, and it just reminds me

06:59

of my grandma’s house.

07:00

I’ll sit at the piano every single day.

07:02

Sometimes I’ll sit down for five minutes,

07:04

sometimes I’m there for two hours,

07:05

like in a trance.

07:06

Music is something I tend to get lost in.

07:08

It can be that way in the studio.

07:10

You know, I’ll blink and eight hours have passed.

07:12

Thanks again GQ, I appreciate the opportunity.

07:14

Much love to you guys, those are my essentials.
