Scorn Is a Next-Gen Exclusive Because Xbox One Can’t Keep Up with PC

According to developer Ebb Software, their upcoming next-gen title, Scorn, is going to be an Xbox Series X exclusive to maintain parity with the PC version. Inspired by the nightmarish works of artists like H.R. Giger and Zdzisław Beksiński, Scorn features disturbing visuals and thrives on its horrific sensibilities. Story and gameplay details are being kept under wraps for the first-person adventure game, but Scorn is already shaping up to be one of the most provocative titles for the next generation.

Scorn has been in development for years for PC, and the recent May Xbox Showcase revealed the game will also launch on Microsoft’s next-gen video game console, Xbox Series X. The next-generation console wars are finally heating up, with battle lines being drawn in the form of exclusive titles, technical demonstrations, and liberal use of technical terms like “teraflops” and “gameplay.” Both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are still on track to release before the end of 2020, even accounting for the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

In an interview with GamingBolt, Ebb Software’s Ljubomir Peklar, director of Scorn, explained the circumstances behind the horror title’s next-gen release. Scorn is currently set to release exclusively on PC and Xbox Series X, with no plans for any current-gen versions. As for a PS5 version, Peklar offered a more cryptic, “We can’t discuss any info regarding PlayStation.” In any case, Peklar explained the Xbox Series X release will allow for parity between the PC and console versions, something that just couldn’t possibly be maintained with current-gen machines in the mix. The Xbox Series X version will run at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, and an Xbox One port simply would not be able to match that level of performance.

Peklar’s comments make sense when it comes to Scorn making the best impression it can. Cross-gen ports are a neat idea, with services like Xbox Smart Delivery allowing owners of older hardware to play cutting-edge video games, albeit in a compromised form. However, Ebb Software decided the compromises wouldn’t be worth the visual cost, especially if it means losing the precious 60 FPS.

In terms of the possibility of a PlayStation 5 version, Peklar’s “no comment” suggests Scorn will be a timed exclusive for Xbox Series X, meaning a PlayStation 5 port may well arrive after several months or more, especially if the title proves successful for the independent Serbian studio. As of right now, Scorn is currently without a release date, but the only option for console players looking to indulge in the game’s Eldritch presentation will be PC or Xbox Series X - at least at launch.
