Bad news, people, hair salons are going to be closed for the foreseeable. Thankfully for anyone struggling to stay on top of their hair maintenance routine, we’ve rounded up definitive guides on how to dye your hair at home, balayage your ends, cut your short hair, remove hair extensions, and chop your fringe; our Fashion Editor has even shared a step-by-step guide to cutting your man’s hair.

Now, we are turning our attention to the curly-haired ladies with an expert guide on how to cut your curly hair yourself at home.

As all proud owners of curly locks know well, styling and taming their curls can often prove problematic but there’s a plethora of curl creams and gels out there to help you make the most of your beautiful bounce.

As Lucy Jones, Larry King senior stylist and a curly hair lady, explains: “Cutting curls always has a slightly different approach due to the hair’s natural body and the way the hair sits differently from wet to dry.”

Here, she shares a step-by-step guide to cutting curly hair at home..

Step 1: Wash hair and let it dry naturally before cutting

I would wash or wet and dampen the curls with Larry King Social Life Shampoo and Liquid Hairbrush Conditioner and apply your product of choice and let your hair dry naturally. I advice letting the hair dry naturally before cutting it due to the curl’s natural spring back.

Step 2: Assess what needs cutting (and remember, less is more when cutting!)

It’s difficult to control the hair so concentrate mostly around the front and the top as a small amount of weight will make a big difference. Consider how much you think needs to come off and then half it; you can always go back and take more off if needed.

Step 3: Prepare the hair for the chop

Part your hair where it naturally falls and pull it in front of both ears, remove the back hair out of the way.

In front of a mirror, look how the curls naturally fall then slice the ends away from each curl following the shape of a triangle from the tip of your nose through to the ends of your hair only removing split ends.

I would then pull all your hair up and to the centre of the head until you are left with just a few strands from the top layer of hair. Allow the hair to fall if it wants to and remove what looks like split ends, which should be no more than half an inch / a few centimetres.

Shake your hair out at the root and you should feel the curls shape the face a little better, lifting the face and giving hair more volume.

Less really is more with curls. It is easy to remove too much and completely change the shape so just this small tweak will make a big difference until you can get back in the salon for a proper haircut.
