“Lo Siento” by Destiny Malibu

Pop singer/songwriter Destiny Malibu is having quite the year indeed. It’s only March, and the California-born temptress has issued not one but three stunning new studio cuts in “Sweet Persuasion,” Kissed by an Angel and, most recently, the Latin-flavored “Lo Siento,” which is burning up the underground like few other pop tracks are this month. “Lo Siento” capitalizes on the success of Malibu’s last releases by introducing us to yet another layer of her artistry, this time coming in the form of a Latin pop hook that she straddles with relative ease from start to finish. At close to three and a half minutes in total length, this probably won’t be the longest single you listen to this March, but one thing is for sure – it’s definitely going to be one of the more memorable.

The bassline here is the most defined instrumental element in the track, and I think that had it not been mixed with as much physicality as it was, the natural grandeur of the lead vocal might not be as prominent in the grander scheme of things as it ultimately is in this particular instance. By keeping the low-end tonality as fresh and relevant to the hook as any part of the percussive groove is, Destiny Malibu is able to create a backdrop suited to both club-goers and casual listeners alike, both of whom have been craving some exciting rhythm to kick off the impending spring season with this year.

You don’t have to be especially fluent in Spanish to understand and appreciate the passion in the vocal delivery that Destiny Malibu offers us in the chorus of her latest song; in fact, if you’ve got an ear for strong melodicism in the pop genre, I don’t think you need to be particularly well versed in either of the languages she employs in this track. When it comes to creating a mood with sheer harmonies, few singer/songwriters in the pop underground are quite as adept as this player is, and in “Lo Siento,” she makes it perfectly clear to anyone who would have the gall to challenge her artistic credibility that she isn’t afraid to experiment with multidimensional concepts and untried formulas, even if it means stepping out of her comfort zone in the recording studio.

If you love groove-powered pop music packing as much heat as a Los Angeles summer sun, Destiny Malibu’s “Lo Siento” is a song that you really should be listening to this March. Malibu has been slowly but surely coming into her own over the last couple of years, taking her time to develop her songcraft without too many external influences to come between her organic artistry and the desires of the general public, and in my view, she’s taking her game to the next level here. 2020 is shaping up to be a very lucrative year for this songwriter’s brand, and if she can maintain the present momentum she’s got, it wouldn’t surprise me if she made a crossover to the mainstream charts before next January.
