Spawn: Jamie Foxx Still On Board For Upcoming Remake

Jamie Foxx is still starring in Spawn despite the recent rumors. Todd McFarlane helped create one of Spider-Man’s most famous villains, Venom, in the ’80s, but in the ’90s, he created a character that is just as popular: Spawn. Spawn first appeared in 1992 and five years later, New Line Cinema banked on the character’s popularity and made the first Spawn film starring Michael Jai White. Now over 20 years later, McFarlane is still trying to make the second film.

Talks of a Spawn sequel or reboot have been rumored for over a decade, but the reboot finally started to gain traction in 2017 when it was announced that Jason Blum was producing Spawn with Mcfarlane on board to be the film’s director and writer. The next year Jamie Foxx was confirmed as Spawn, having been interested in the role since 2013. Recently however, there have been rumors that Foxx left the project after McFarlane said that an “academy award-winning guy“ dropped out of the film, but that seems to not be the case.

According to ComicbookFoxx was not the Academy Award winner that McFarlane was referring to, but rather a writer that had been working on the project. At this point, it hasn’t been announced who the writer is, as McFarlane has been the only confirmed writer on the film thus far.

Despite the film being in development hell for years, McFarlane has kept his fans in the loop about what is going on with Spawn. McFarlane has continually posted on social media about the status of the movie, with the last update being a reassurance that Spawn will be rated R. Blumhouse also seems to be taking a page from Warner Bros. Joker by giving Spawn a low budget. The story for Spawn is unknown at this time despite McFarlane having a script, but it has been confirmed that Spawn won’t be an origin story and that Jeremy Renner may be playing Twitch Williams.

If the rumors about Foxx’s departure had been true, it would have been a big blow to the movie. The casting of Foxx in the role of Al Simmons got a lot of people interested in the film, especially since he’s won an Oscar. McFarlane is dead set on doing the Spawn reboot right, so if Foxx were to drop out, there’s a good possibility the film could have gotten delayed even longer until McFarlane found another actor he liked. Spawn is still without a release date, but development will continue this year.
