Lady Gaga’s ‘Stupid Love’ Lyrics Capture Everything You Feel Moving On and Dating After Heartbreak

Lady Gaga’s new era begins tonight with the singer’s official release of “Stupid Love.” While the song was leaked before, Gaga just dropped the single and music video with it at midnight. The visually stunning video was shot on an iPhone, no joke, so take that in. It’s very Power Rangers, dance off-esque, with Gaga and her “Kindness punks” starring in it:

Lyrically, the song is a pop anthem that explores the exhilaration of meeting someone new after being heartbroken. Gaga sings about being ready to find love again despite knowing how much breakups hurt. That sentiment is best captured in the lyrics, “I don’t need a reason (Oh) / Not sorry, I want your stupid love” and “You’re the one that I’ve been waiting for / Gotta quit this crying, nobody’s gonna / Heal me if I don’t open the door.”

Gaga has a very personal connection to the song’s subject. She has moved on after a major split in 2019. The singer was engaged to Christian Carino only to have that relationship end shortly before the Oscars last year. A source told People, simply, “it just didn’t work out. Relationships sometimes end. There’s no long dramatic story.”

Gaga has had two relationships since the split. In the summer of 2019, she was linked to audio engineer Dan Horton. “Gaga has real chemistry with Dan,” a source told Entertainment Tonight in July. “They have been seeing each other for weeks and have been working with each other for a while. They have been working on new music, have spent hours of work time together and became really close. They’re working very closely together at a home studio in Hollywood, and sparks just started flying. People noticed the chemistry early on, and now that she has taken some time to herself, she finally feels free to date. They seem like a pretty good match.”

But by the fall, they faded out. At the end of 2019, Gaga was seen with her new and current boyfriend Michael Polansky. Gaga went Instagram official with Polansky in early February 2020. She shared a Valentine’s Day tribute to him, too.

A source told E! in early February that Gaga “has been dating the same guy for over a month. They’ve been seeing other since before the holidays and she’s crazy about him,” adding that “they’ve been out and about in Los Angeles and spending a lot of time at her house. She’s taking him everywhere she goes and they don’t want to be [a] part.”

Here, Gaga’s full lyrics to take in, via Genius:

Verse 1
You’re the one that I’ve been waiting for
Gotta quit this cryin’, nobody’s gonna
Heal me if I don’t open the door
Kinda hard to believe, gotta have faith in me

Refrain

Freak out, I freak out, I freak out, I freak out (Look at me)
I get down, I get down, I get down, I get down (Look at me)
Freak out, I freak out, I freak out, I freak out
Look at me now

Pre-Chorus

‘Cause all I ever wanted was love
Hey-ah, hey-ah (Ooh-ooh)
Hey-ah, hey-ah (Ooh-ooh)
Hey-ah, hey-ah
All I ever wanted was love
Hey-ah, hey-ah (Ooh-ooh)
Hey-ah, hey-ah (Ooh-ooh)
Hey-ah, hey-ah, hey-ah (Higher, higher)

Chorus

I want your stupid love, love
I want your stupid love, love
(Oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh-oh)

Verse 2

Now, it’s time to free me from the chain
I gotta find that peace, is it too late or
Could this love protect me from the pain?
I would battle for you (Even if I break in two)

Refrain

Freak out, I freak out, I freak out, I freak out (Look at me)
I get down, I get down, I get down, I get down (Look at me)
Freak out, I freak out, I freak out, I freak out
Look at me now

Pre-Chorus

‘Cause all I ever wanted was love
Hey-ah, hey-ah (Ooh-ooh)
Hey-ah, hey-ah (Ooh-ooh)
Hey-ah, hey-ah
All I ever wanted was love

Hey-ah, hey-ah (Ooh-ooh)
Hey-ah, hey-ah, hey-ah (Higher, higher)
