Makeup artist, Mary Phillips has a knack for creating polished skin and fierce, flirty femme fatale makeup. In fact, her finesse with a fan brush has made her the go-to pro among a star-studded roster of clients. Chrissy Teigen, Kendall Jenner, Priyanka Chopra and Hailey Bieber have all sought out the pro to ready them for high-profile red carpet moments, big budget campaigns and glossy magazine covers.
She’s also responsible for the absolute perfection that was Hailey Bieber’s Vanity Fair Oscar Party makeup at this week’s most sought-after, post-awards bash – sultry and subtly sexy, it perfectly balanced classic 90s supermodel glam with glassy, modern skin.
We chatted to Mary about what went in to achieving the look, and what it’s like to work with Hollywood’s most recognisable faces.
Talk us through the look – what was the inspiration?
“When creating this look for Hailey, I was inspired by the sex kitten 90s vibes,” Mary explains.
What products did you use?
“For Hailey’s eyes I used the Latte Gen Nude Eyeshadow Palette from bareMinerals and blended the shade Solstice onto the eye lid and under the eye for a wash of warm brown colour. I also added the shade Spirit to the outer crease and corner to add some depth.
I lined the top lash line with a liquid liner and smudged the wing with a smudger brush and a bit of smoky grey shadow. I shaped her brows using the Brow Master Sculpting Eyebrow Pencil in Honey to blend and brush brows into place. For lips, I slightly over-lined right outside of the lip line for a fuller look using the Gen Nude Under Over Lip Liner in Borderline and On Point with the Mineralist Hydra-Smoothing Lipstick [coming soon] in Balance and Insight over the top.
I added bronzer on contour areas for dimension and a sunkissed complexion and blush in an upward direction along the cheek and finished by applying a little more over the cheeks with my fingers for a fresh, flush glow.
To finish, I lightly dusted highlighter down the bridge of her nose and on the high points of her cheeks with the tapered Diffused Highlight Brush and misted some Dew Mist Shimmering Setting Spray across her face and body to set makeup and hydrate skin with a light iridescence.”
How do you and Hailey go about choosing the makeup looks, is it a collaborative effort?
“When choosing makeup looks, Hailey and I will share photos, ideas and opinions.”
What sort of finish does Hailey like to achieve with her makeup?
“Hailey always likes clean skin, then the rest of the makeup vibe depends on which event she’s attending.”
How far in advance do you plan the look?
“We usually get on a group chat the week of to plan and discuss the look.”
Do you tend to make last minute decisions and changes?
“Sometimes. We might change things up on the day (or night).”
What are your favourite products to use on Hailey?
“I’ve really been loving all of the bareMinerals lip products on Hailey – particularly the Mineralist Hydra-Smoothing Lipstick because it’s so rich in colour and creamy in texture.”
