Review: “Afraid of Love” The Pond Hawks

Chicago based Indie duo, The Pond Hawks have risen beyond a quiet buzz to radio fame and sonic majesty with their newest release, “Afraid of Love”. Influenced by The Beatles their music is genre imaginative, and colorfully vivid. The duo Mario Novell and Jorie Gracen collect harmonies and vibrant music and connect them with thought provoking lyrics. As an indie group they are gaining popularity day by day.

“Afraid of Love” has elements of The Beatles coupled with their own unique sound. Both Mario and Jorie collectively write the songs and perform them. Each song they do is very different from the next, however I believe the newest is one of their best. They are extremely popular on social media as well as on the radio, and always rank at the top of Reverbnation worldwide.

Naming themselves after a dragon fly, The PondHawks write and sing poetry using colorful metaphors for feelings and moods and write surprise endings according to an interview recently published. “Afraid of Love” has one of those surprise endings, however even if you do not examine the lyrics you will still love the music.

A mash of Beatles, psychedelic pop, and sophisticated progressive, “Afraid of Love” is more than a romance story. It’s an addictive listen with elements of message driven lyrics, synth tones, constant harmonies, and cryptic journeys. They record their music in what’s said to be a haunted studio which is perhaps the reason for some of their success. They aren’t afraid to go the extra mile to evoke something for humanity in a troubled world. Watch out for this group as they are heading places really soon.
