Why Beyoncé Skipped the 2020 Critics’ Choice Awards Despite Having a Nomination

Nominate Beyoncé for an award, and it’s no guarantee she’ll show up for the ceremony. The singer has a Critics’ Choice Awards nomination tonight for her The Lion King song “Spirit,” but it wasn’t enough to get her to honor the ceremony with her presence. Bey was nominated for the show’s Best Song category along with “Glasgow (No Place Like Home)” from Wild Rose, “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from Rocketman, “I’m Standing With You” from Breakthrough, “Into the Unknown” from Frozen II, “Speechless” from Aladdin, and “Stand Up” from Harriet.

In this case, Bey’s absence is understandable: She isn’t the clear frontrunner for Best Song—”(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from Rocketman won at the Golden Globes—and the Critics’ Choice Awards tends to be a little quieter overall other awards shows. Beyoncé’s appearance at the Globes last week was a surprise, in fact, as she arrived late during the ceremony. She had a Best Original Song nomination and did not win.

But Beyoncé’s award season run is far from over. The Grammys are coming, and she has four nominations for that ceremony. Bey is nominated for Best Pop Solo Performance (for “Spirit”), Best Pop Vocal Album (The Lion King: The Gift), Best Song Written for Visual Media (“Spirit”), and Best Music Film (Homecoming).

A Beyoncé Oscars appearance could be in the cards too: “Spirit” is on the short list for the Academy Awards’ Best Original Song category.
