These are the top fitness trends for 2020 according to Meghan Markle, Kim Kardashian and Rihanna’s personal trainer

You’ve heard it all before – new year, new you, it’s time to get back on the wellness bandwagon after a month of serious December indulgence. The best way to get yourself into the swing of it? Embrace something new.

When it comes to being au-fait with the hottest new fitness trends for 2020, we turned to Sebastien Lagree, go-to celebrity trainer and founder of Lagree Fitness whose long list of famous fans include Meghan Markle, Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Chrissy Teigen, Jennifer Aniston, Michelle Obama… do you really need us to go on?

So, as the A-listers swear by his methods for staying fit and toned, we asked Sebastien for predictions and suggestions on what we’ll be seeing more of in 2020. From vegan diets to at-home exercise, here’s what he had to say…

Sebastien says that boutique Fitness will continue to grow at what he predicts to be a double digit rate in 2020. We all know that working out is getting more and more popular, and he suggests more people are working out for the social benefit.

“This means we will continue to see a hybridization of workout such as Lagree + Treadmill. More Boutique Fitness Studios are opening with 2 or more combinations of different workouts, and commercial studios are incorporating more tech (screens, etc, ..) in the workout. There is a growing trend for shorter classes as well.”

What about at-home exercise?

Peloton has kind of renewed the interest in the at-home workouts, so you will see a proliferation of new workouts such as the Mirror for example. At home workouts are getting more tech-y as well.”

How do you see technology, apps and equipment evolving this year?

Sebastien acknowledged the growth in fitness apps and the way they’re adapting to offer fuller, more in-depth lifestyle packages, saying “Fitness apps are getting more and more sophisticated. We will see a greater integration of exercise, food, nutrition, and lifestyle in those apps this year.”

As we see an increase in people practicing exercise for mindfulness, from yoga breathwork to boxing, Sebastien agreed that this trend is going nowhere any time soon.

“More and more people are becoming aware of the intellectual, psychological, emotional, and spiritual benefits of exercise and more people will begin choosing a workout method based on this new awareness. This is the new 20 years + trend in fitness: more people will workout for the mental benefits than the physiological benefits. “

Finally, what nutrition tips and predictions would you give for 2020?

With trends like Veganuary rife, Sebastien noted how prolific alternative, non-omnivore diets are becoming. “Plant-based diets are on the rise and very soon we could see the turning point in the food industry where people just stop eating (or seriously limit their consumption of) meat and other animal products.”
